Excellent Introduction book to Counseling Children
By Redfield
First of all, the book itself is great quality all around - it just looks and feels nice. The size is also a plus! (smaller than some).

Secondly, this was a required text for my Master's program and I'm very glad it was. The chapters are short, extremely easy to read, and very insightful. While some of the material might seem a bit common sense, there are many great takeaways throughout each chapter. Often these great insights originate from the simple fact of how different counseling children is than counseling adolescents and/or adults. Kathryn, David, and Rebecca have wrote a textbook that many other author's should take notes on as it does not become so overwrought with ridiculous amounts of referencing or words that most people don't even know exist. Instead I found myself swiftly reading through each assigned chapter with ease and enjoyment (something that doesn't happen often when it comes to a textbook).

If you need this as a required reading for a class then I am assuming you have to get it either way. So all my review can do is let you know this one is worth your money, especially if you are interested in the possibility of working with children in your profession.

If you stumbled upon this and thought it might make a good addition to your academic collection and pursuits for your profession - I would highly recommend giving it a shot.

Forever Marked

Troy Sacheverell, fifth earl of Ravenhurst, was captured in France. He'd gone to fight Napoleon, but what he found was much more sinister. Dragged from prison to an old French manor on the outskirts of civilization, he was purchased by a rich and twisted widow. And more dangerous still was the young woman who claimed him.

Lillian had not chosen to live with Camille, her stepmother, but nobody escaped the Black Widow's web. And on her nineteenth birthday, Lillian became Camille's heir. Her gift was a plaything: a man to end her naiveté, a man perfect in all ways but his stolen freedom. Yet even as Lillian did as she was told, marked that beautiful flesh and branded it with the flower of her name, all she desired was escape. In another place, in another world, she'd desired love. Now, looking into burning blue eyes, she knew there was no place to run. No matter if should she flee, no matter where she might go, she and this man were prisoners of passion, inextricably linked by the lily brand.

And while her heart remained locked in ice, his burnt with hate. Would they ever find true happiness?

Unique but very dark premise for a romance
By ellejir
"The Lily Brand" is the debut novel for Sandra Schwab and it shows promise for an author who is willing to take some risks with her characters and plots. It is far from a standard Regency historical romance--the story is dark and moody, and the characters' psychological development is the focus.

The hero of the story is Murgatroyd Sacheverell, the fifth Earl of Ravenhurst (called "Troy" for short, thank heavens!) Captured by the French before the battle of Waterloo, he is in a filthy French prison when the ever-so-evil "Black Widow" Camille picks him out and takes him home as a "gift" for her young stepdaughter, Lily. Camille is an over-the-top villainess who likes to torture and beat her male "playthings" into groveling submission and she wants Lily to follow in her footsteps. She has Lily literally brand Troy with a hot iron and lead him around on a chain. Lily, too frightened of her stepmother to object, secretly plans her own escape and manages to flee to her grandfather's protection in England.

Six months later, Lily, having been accepted by London society and being courted by a young viscount, is introduced to the viscount's cousin who is (of course!) Troy. Lily and Troy instantly recognize one another and Troy launches a desperate attempt to prevent his young cousin from marrying a woman that he believes to be an evil bi**h. Troy's plan backfires and he ends up having to marry the woman he loathes himself. Troy, filled with rage and shame, cuts himself off from his new wife, and Lily, full of guilt and shame, freezes him out. With the help of time, Troy's friends and Lily's nanny, Troy slowly comes to realize that Lily was as much a victim as himself and gradually the couple begin to heal their damaged hearts and minds.

The psychological exploration of the characters is well done and interesting. Both Lily and Troy are suffering from a type of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome following their horrific and dehumanizing experiences. The book gets a little bit redundant in parts, with Troy and Lily going over and over in their own minds the incidents of the past and stewing in their respective rage and guilt. I found the evil stepmother Camille a bit too much to be believed and ridiculously overt in her perversions. I also cannot see why she would want to "cut off the balls" from someone that she is planning to use as a sex toy--seems to me that making her sex toys into eunuchs limits their usefulness. Troy's school chums, a homosexual couple, were a refreshing addition to the story, but Lily and Troy's blithe acceptance of what at that time was considered to be a very scandalous (and illegal) relationship seems a bit anachronistic.

In summary, this is an unusual and rather dark historical romance set in the Regency period. The book is certainly not without its problems, but the characters are interesting and the story unique and atmospheric. The subject matter is very dark in some parts with scenes of torture and Camille's violent and nonviolent sexual perversions so *major* warnings to readers who dislike that sort of thing in a romance novel.

Dark Romance: neither driven by Romance or Lust
By Fathom
This was a very strange read for me; I would call it more of a Dark Romance. But the story is really not built on either romance or lust which is odd considering this is supposed to be a romance. The story resembles a dark and twisted Cinderella story. True there is a happy ending, but the trip there is certainly not happy and you can foresee the characters definitely having mental issues that will always be in the background.

Lily's father remarried another woman. When her father died when Lily was a young age, her stepmother became her sole guardian. Camille, her stepmother, is known throughout the French prison where Troy, an Earl, is imprisoned as a POW of the French-British war as the "Black Widow." Camille is in to the S&M, except she doesn't care if her victims die or if they are in pain. Camille goes shopping for another slave in the prison, and chooses Troy as a gift for Lily.

Troy's nightmare of a captivity has only just begun have repeated whippings when Camille forces Lily to brand a lily onto Troy's chest to mark him as her possession. From this moment on, Lily sees Troy as hers and despite her stepmothers strict orders to keep meting out the torture on Troy, she tries to ease him in secret in the only she can w/ medicine, food, and removing his gag in private.

When the opportunity finally presents an escape from her own environs, Lily helps Troy escape as well, leaving him in a forest w/ the only thing of value she has for him to trade--a locket of her parents.

One year later, Lily is being introduced to the ton by her noble aunt and uncle. She is pursued by a young Viscount who is deeply enamored. Unfortunately, the Viscount's cousin is Troy. Troy is determined to prevent any possible marriage and unintentionally compromises Lily in anger, which results in their marriage. The journey of their marriage is truly the most heartbreaking and sad things I have ever read. Both are filled w/ completely w/ nightmares, anguish, and guilt. As I wrote earlier, this is truly a strange romance because there is absolutely nothing romantic or even sensual about the majority of this book. Troy is impotent w/ anger and pain. Lily is terrified w/ guilt and fear of her stepmother. This book is about how 2 people w/ such huge scars inside them were able to break free from their mental chains and be normal once again.

Kudos to a very unconventional and darkly emotional read, I'm not sure if I would be able to re-read this because it is very dark. But I gave this 5 stars because, the style was very original and a big gamble against the standard romance.

Riveting story, great character development, lush historical detail
By Patricia Haller
No cardboard characters or stock situations in this unique and riveting romance. The main characters have depth that makes you care about them and makes their journey from loathing to love both believable and moving. And the secondary characters are both humorous and refreshingly unstereotypical. I definitely recommend "The Lily Brand!"

Outstanding and must have book!
By A. Ferreira
As a Medical Oncologist for the last twenty years, this is the best
book on Palliative care I have found and I am loving it!

The chapters are written in a clear, elegant and informative way by great
experts in the field of palliative care (e.g. Eduardo Bruera).
I had no difficult whatsoever in finding exactly what I need as key information
to the benefit of my patients.

I just have to say that before having personally looked at the book itself in a medical bookstore
I had seen the comments of the above reviewer in the Amazon website. This previous review scared me
to buy the book online as it was in my view too negative and, would dare to say,
does not match at all with the wonderfull book I have now in my hands.

This previous review just made me waste 3-4 months of good reading.
This is the time span until I saw the book
in a Medical Library and could go through its pages personally .
After that I just Jumped and bought it!
So, for the Medical professional who works with palliative treatment and wants the better
for his or her patients, THIS IS A MUST HAVE!
Maybe Amazon and the Editor could allow internauts to go through its pages as a sample.
This would certainly help them to see how precious this book is.

Palliative Medicine
By Palliative Doc
As the specialty of palliative medicine matures, more and more books have been published, however, the classic Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine remains the standard by which others are compared. In Walsh's new book, palliative medicine is comprehensively covered, including several chapters not included in other textbooks. However, one problem with the book is it's fragmentation. For example, there is not a clear, comprehensive chapter on opioids--I found myself having to switch between 2 or 3 chapters to get the information I needed. Such fragmentation makes it difficult to readily use a textbook, and as a consumer, encourages me to spend my dollars elsewhere. I look forward to the 2nd edition, where I hope such fragmentation will be eliminated, making Walsh's book ostensibly one of the top in the specialty.

Excellent Resource for Professionals in Training
By Pall Med Fellow
As a physician in training, I found Dr. Walsh's textbook to be an excellent resource for dealing with day-to-day clinical duties, as well as for preparing presentations. The text is a good mix of theory and clinical evidence, sprinkled with sound opinion. Chapters cover all the facets of palliative medicine and written by a veritable roster of who's who in the specialty. I did find that the chapters may need to be better organized in order to provide quicker access to information. All in all, I would recommend this reference to health professionals who are both learning and practicing palliative care.

The Hating Game: A Novel, by Sally Thorne

Debut author Sally Thorne bursts on the scene with a hilarious and sexy workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love.

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.

                       2) A person’s undoing

                       3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

Hands down one of my new absolute favourites!
By Kristine: Glass Paper Ink Bookblog
PLATINUM

I recently attended a Writers Retreat where one book in particular was mentioned, and I use the term mentioned very loosely, what actually happened was they demanded we all read it immediately. Suffice to say, I purchased the ebook that night and dove in, immediately I was smitten, utterly invested and truly in love with every single word written by Sally Thorne.

"Watching you pretend to hate that nickname is the best part of my day."

Lucy Hutton always dreamt of working in the publishing industry, as an avid reader her love for all things books was greater than anything she'd ever known, being hired by Gamin Publishing was everything she had ever imagined, but when her beloved company was on the brink of collapse and amalgamation with another struggling publishing house, Bexley Books, became her reality, her career goals stayed alive, just barely, with a host of personnel cuts and the loss of her best friend Val, her work world was rocked. The day she met Joshua Templeman seemed like a possible new beginning, but his cool disregard of her almost immediately sent shockwaves through her usually cherry demeanor, a war began that day and with every day that past their mutual dislike of each other grew.

"You've broken me down so completely, I can't even handle it when a guy tells me I'm beautiful."

The Hating Game written in the first person point of view painted Lucy as both incredibly smart, and extremely funny, every snarky thought, every snappy comeback, every moment of despair mixed with joy as Joshua became Josh in front of her eyes. Every moment in this book served to cement my love of the author's words, I was invested immediately, but each new chapter brought with it feelings of awe, the more I read the deeper in love I fell, the more real Lucy and Joshua felt, the more their personalities jumped off the page and straight into my heart.

"I'm about to lose something I never had to begin with."

The Hating Game is slow burn in the very best way, Thorne builds not only the connection between her hero and heroine but the readers attachment to them, their witty dialogue served to lure the reader into losing themselves in one of the best bouts of drawn out verbal foreplay that I have ever experienced. Usually when I enjoy a book it only serves to make me want to devour the words, here however I simultaneously wanted to speed read my way to end, and slow down in order to savor every moment. I loved every second here, I wanted to drown in Thorne's words, I wanted to escape into Lucy and Joshua's world, stand in the corner, watching them like a creeper, I wanted to befriend them, I wanted to relax with Lucy over a glass of wine after a long day at work, I wanted to know everything that happened in between every moment, every lost look, every sigh, every secret smile. The Hating Game has quickly became one of my very favourite books, climbing it's way onto not only my Best of 2016 List but my favourite of all time list. If this is how Sally Thorne marks her debut into bookworld, I can only imagine what she has yet to do.

Amazing enemies to lovers ~ effortless read and hilarious
By DonnaC
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
5 stars!!!

“My hostage. My blackmailed, unwilling captive. Stockholm Shortcake.”

There is nothing like a good hate/love book to get your reading mojo well and truly pumping and that is exactly what The Hating Game delivered. Sally Thorne captured everything about those office relationships where competition takes on a whole new meaning and to think that this is her debut novel, I was totally blown away.

Enemies to lovers is one of those tropes that literally has me salivating. You learn more about a person through their actions in that kind of environment, especially in the work place. It is harder to hate than it is to love and there is often a very fine line between the two. Sometimes there is that genuine hate, because let’s be honest, there are a lot of douches and b****es in the world, but more often than not we hate as a veil of our true feelings and that was definitely the case with these two.

“Shortcake, if we were flirting, you’d know about it.”
“Because I’d be traumatized?”
“Because you’d be thinking about it later on, lying in bed.”

Two publishing houses struggling in the economic climate merge to ensure the viability of at least one of them, two CEO’s, two assistants. One male assistant, one female assistant who knock their a**es out week after week to be the best. This was all about one-upmanship. Who could work the longest hours, who was more efficient, who has the best ideas etc.: Their competitiveness was the source of many hilarious scenes, yet so relatable having been in a similar environment myself. But they loved to hate one and other, their inter-office games of “hate” had me laughing so many times and this book was written so well their story effortlessly flowed from page to page. This was an easy read, a real page turner.

“The trick is to find someone who’s strong enough to take it. That one person who can give it back as good as they get.”

Lucy Hutton was working in a place that she had dreamt of since she was a teenager. For her, publishing had always been her dreams albeit maybe not as a PA to the CEO. Her position had left her friendless because of everyone’s “snitch” mentality and her only source of enjoyment in her working day were her battles with Joshua. These two sat in the same office where daggers were drawn from clock in to clock out. Where juvenile staring competitions were the norm and trying to decipher codes and logins were their speciality.

“I feel like your Easter egg.”

Joshua was a whizz with numbers, he kept himself to himself and was definitely a closed book. He was an ornery man of rituals and order and was as predictable as they came. But who was Joshua Templeman? With a new position being made as COO, a promotion for Lucy or Joshua, battle lines are well and truly drawn as both know that neither one could work for the other. This was a fight to the death in more ways than one. Lucy begins to see a different side to Joshua when little chinks in his armour are slowly revealed, could this be who Joshua Templeman really is and god forbid Lucy for actually…falling in love.

“The energy that usually lashes ineffectively inside each of us now has a conduit, forming a loop of electricity between us, cycling through me, into him. My heart is glowing in my chest like a bulb, flashing brighter with each movement of his lips.”

The humour and banter in this book was contagious from start to finish, the dialogue was spot on and the chemistry was seriously off the charts. Even in hate mode you could feel those flickers of electricity and you were constantly on edge just waiting for them to ignite into a raging inferno. These two as enemies were hilarious, as lovers totally swoon worthy. I adored EVERYTHING about this book. I made the mistake of starting this late in the day and then read into the early hours of the morning, I couldn’t put it down. The characters were infectious, the plot was riveting and as each layer of Joshua Templeman was revealed my heart just got mushier and mushier. For those that love enemies to lovers this is a must read and the story will speak for itself.

“This is the best game I’ve ever played in my entire life.”

Wish I could give it 10 stars. Perfect story!
By Lalo
I cannot believe that this is the first book by this author. It was so well done. My daughter read it and insisted I read it. She laughed out loud so often while she was reading it, I was prepared for a romantic comedy. While the book is funny, it also dealt with some serious subjects. I am so pleased with this book. It was fun to read. There were a few times I decided not to read it, like sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's office, it was just so funny, I was afraid I would laugh and not be able to stop and embarrass myself, so I read it when I was at home and free to laugh to my heart's content. Having worked in the corporate world for 30 plus years, I really enjoyed the interactions between co-workers and especially HR. The book was delightful and the ending was great. I love Joshua Templeman and Shortcake was perfect for him. Glad to see these two get together.

It is a perfect book.

The best "voices" I've ever read.
By A Customer
As a creative writing teacher and an author myself, I recommend this book to all those aspiring writers who want to learn characterization. Maynard, I feel, has the best ear in the business for dialogue, and I stand in awe of what she has done in this book. She has chosen to evolve her plot via a series of small monologues spoken by the various characters, and the result is riveting. Here you see clearly that every character has their own agenda, and yet in telling their version of the truth, the reader is able to piece together what actually occurred. An utterly masterful job! Characters are drawn by not only WHAT they say, but HOW they say it. Here, diction and word choice are handled with such delicacy that it left me stunned. Her teenagers speak like teenagers (yet are distinct, too, one from another), and although her cast of characters is large, never do the individuals become stock characters. They always retain the uniqueness of the individual. -- Patricia Anthon

a scathing satire of our tv obsessed culture
By Poppydowns
Anyone who would read this book and think it was just a novelization of the Pam Smart story probably watches too many movies of the week on LifetimeTV. This book takes the idea of what happened in the Smart case and uses it as a skeleton to write a sharp and darkly funny FICTIONALIZED look at our society's obsession with television and celebrity. When this book was turned into a movie, a local t.v. station ran an interview with Pam Smart who was uspet about her portrayal in the film. It wouldn't have come as such a surprise to her if she had bothered to read the book. And why would she be upset if she didn't care about fame (or rather infamy)? Don't read this book and wonder how much of it is about Pam Smart but read it wonder how much of it is about our country, our neighbors and ourselves.

Of course, better than the movie
By GadgetChick
After being a fan of the movie 'To Die For' with Nicole Kidman for many years, I decided to finally read the book on which it was based. The book did not disappoint me. Although it turns out the movie is a pretty faithful adaptation of the book, there is a lot in the book that got left out of the movie (obviously, you can't put every little thing from a 300+ page book into a 2-hr movie). There's a lot of rich detail in the book and the voices are so clear and pitch-perfect for the characters. I really, really loved reading this and it's become one of my new favorite novels.

A Library Journal Best Book of 2015
A NPR Great Read of 2015

The Internet in Russia is either the most efficient totalitarian tool or the device by which totalitarianism will be overthrown. Perhaps both.

On the eighth floor of an ordinary-looking building in an otherwise residential district of southwest Moscow, in a room occupied by the Federal Security Service (FSB), is a box the size of a VHS player marked SORM. The Russian government’s front line in the battle for the future of the Internet, SORM is the world’s most intrusive listening device, monitoring e-mails, Internet usage, Skype, and all social networks.

But for every hacker subcontracted by the FSB to interfere with Russia’s antagonists abroad—such as those who, in a massive denial-of-service attack, overwhelmed the entire Internet in neighboring Estonia—there is a radical or an opportunist who is using the web to chip away at the power of the state at home.

Drawing from scores of interviews personally conducted with numerous prominent officials in the Ministry of Communications and web-savvy activists challenging the state, Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan peel back the history of advanced surveillance systems in Russia. From research laboratories in Soviet-era labor camps, to the legalization of government monitoring of all telephone and Internet communications in the 1990s, to the present day, their incisive and alarming investigation into the Kremlin’s massive online-surveillance state exposes just how easily a free global exchange can be coerced into becoming a tool of repression and geopolitical warfare. Dissidents, oligarchs, and some of the world’s most dangerous hackers collide in the uniquely Russian virtual world of The Red Web.

Review
"Having demonstrated the resurgent power of Russia's secret services in their first book, The New Nobility, Soldatov and Borogan devote much of The Red Web to tracing the roots of modern Russia's surveillance programs back to the KGB. It is a convincing effort, as the authors take the reader back to the 1950s and show how, for more than six decades, the Soviet and then Russian state sought to apply its best minds and, eventually, its best technology to the task of knowing who was doing what, when, where and why." - OpenDemocracy

"This unusual book describes a significant and concealed aspect of current Russian politics. The most troubling aspect of the Red Web may be its implication for Russia's evolution and its accommodation with the West." - Library Journal, Editors' Fall Picks

“[Soldatov and Borogan] pull at the roots of the surveillance system in Russia today, and their research leads them quickly to the paranoid society of the Soviet Union.” —The Wall Street Journal

"A well researched and disturbing book by two brave Russian authors.” —The Economist

"A gripping book about of the internet and its censorship in post-Soviet Russia... Having covered technology and the security services from the start of their careers in the 1990s, the two Russian journalists have accumulated expert knowledge few can match. And yet they have written a book not for geeks but for anyone who wants to understand how their country works." —Financial Times

“A masterful study of the struggle between the Kremlin’s desire to control information and the unruly world of ordinary digital citizens.” —The Guardian (UK)

"[An] excellent, highly readable tale of the ongoing struggle to control digital life in Russia. ...[Soldatov and Borogan] have gone on to become foremost experts on the Russian secret services, and count among the country’s few remaining practicing investigative journalists." —Los Angeles Review of Books

"Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan, two of Russia’s top investigative journalists specializing in espionage, have given us a thrilling account of the online war between Russian surveillance and digital protesters. ... A superb book by two brave journalists. It deserves to be widely read because it asks profound questions about freedom and the future of the internet." —International Affairs

“[Soldatov and Borogan]’s incisive and alarming investigation into the Kremlin’s massive online-surveillance state exposes just how easily a free global exchange can be coerced into becoming a tool of repression and geopolitical warfare.” —ANONYMOUS

"The Red Web examines Putin's power grabs and the Russian government's use of surveillance, overt censorship, and intimidation through technology in recent years." —Publishers Weekly

“Riveting… A sad story for supporters of Internet freedom. The authors describe how a relentless security apparatus supported by armies of ‘patriotic citizen hackers’ deploys unevenly against Russian activists and journalists, resulting in state intimidation, detention, and likely murder.” —Library Journal, Starred Review

“Russia hands and Net neutrality advocates alike will find plenty to intrigue in this report from the front lines.” —Kirkus Reviews

"Russian journalists expose Internet censorship and surveillance in Putin's Russia." —Shelf Awareness, Starred Review

“[Andrei Soldatov is] the single most prominent critic of Russia’s surveillance apparatus.” —Edward Snowden

“If you want to know the history of Russian intelligence, look no further. Revealing, new, and rich in detail. From simple surveillance to electronic snooping Russian-style, a gripping and important study. This is a book you hope Russian officials don’t find in your luggage.” —Richard Engel, chief foreign correspondent, NBC News

Fascinating and in-depth history of the Russian Internet since its foundation
By Veni Markovski
It took me about 24 hours to read the whole book - and when I closed the last page, I felt like, well - I want to read more!

It is an in-depth history of the Russian Internet, and the way it has developed since its very first days.

Putting aside the even more history about the phone communications interception and monitoring (which, by the way, is also amazing - just search the names of the people, who 'worked' there - Lev Kopelev and Alexander Solzhenitsyn; and you may be surprised to find out what they did there), the part about the Internet development is quite precise*.

The authors have done a number of interviews, and have used public (and obviously some not-so-public) sources of information, and have managed to put them in an order that makes it an intriguing reading, at moments catching the reader's breath.

The reader (in particular the reader from the USA) might be also fascinated by the description of Mr. Snowden's adventures in Russia - there are some facts, which were not widely known until this book was published.
The American reader will also find more details about the authors of the Russian Internet policy - and these details are much more precise and factual, than similar accounts, shared for example by Richard Clarke in his book Cyber War.

Here's a quote from the book, which is among my favorites (p. 304):
"[Kolesnikov] insisted that what the authorities had done to the Internet was entirely immaterial: 'Look, did it affect your morning coffee?'"

Today, a year after this conversation took place, the Russian Internet continues to change, and develop, and in some cases, it may have affected the morning coffee of some people.

I highly recommend this book - you will have fun reading it.
_______
* - I happened to have worked and traveled a lot of times to Russia since 1990s, and especially in the first decade of the XXI century, so I can confirm personally many of the stories that are described in the book as factually well written.
** - On the picture - my copy of the book, with preferred food and drink for such a reading.

There is nothing nice I can say about the Cheka's newest abbreviation - ...
By TruthSeeker
You need to read this book if you are concerned about government surveillance anywhere, or if you are a student of Russian history. The authors give us a concise history of surveillance both in and out of the former Soviet Union and today's Russia. The treatment of government response to new technology is enlightening and cause for concern.
There is nothing nice I can say about the Cheka's newest abbreviation - FSB. It is just a new name for a bunch of thugs wrapped in government titles. Putin is a former intel officer who has maneuvered his way into a dictatorship. I feel sorry for the citizens of Russia who deserve better.
This book is a keeper.

The Russian Internet was broken the day it was created
By Dominic Basulto
“The Red Web” is the definitive account of how the Kremlin has thoroughly co-opted the Russian Internet, turning it into an effective tool for the modern surveillance state. It's also a haunting commentary on how the Russian Internet was doomed from the outset, despite all its early promise during the Yeltsin era. As Soldatov and Borogan explain, Russia was locked into an inferior product — an Internet that was only marginally free and expressive — thanks to the way information was viewed by the repressive Soviet state. Where the book gets bogged down is in all the details of the Soviet era -- but it does a great job of outlining the key players in today's digital landscape. If you've been following all the twists and turns of how the Kremlin is trying to get foreign companies to relocate their servers to Russian soil and all the debate over which sites should be censored and why, this book offers a fascinating back story.
