About the Author
William Law was one of the great clerics and educators of the Church of England. He was educated at Cambridge, eventually taking a teaching position there in addition to being ordained in the Church of England. The best known and most popular of the books he wrote was "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life."

A True word on the Holy Spirit!

Anything by William Law is GOOD.

Some people accuse William Law of being a mystic! I do not understand how some can say that? He was, in fact, totally practical. He talked a great deal about how to ACTUALLY live the Christian life, in obedience and holiness. I think that the people who accuse him, Madam Guyon and others of being mystics is because they do NOT believe that living a holy life is actually possible. Therefore, they accuse them of being mystics, a.k.a. mystical, not being real or living in reality. It reminds me of what Paul warned us about the Last Days, "...realize this, that in the last days..." that men "...will be holding to a FORM of Godliness but denying the power thereof, from such turn away [have nothing to do with these who spread UNBELIEF in God's power, to change us and make us LIKE HIM, holy]." II Tim. 3:1 and 3:5.

Any one who teaches obedience and holiness today is accused of all kinds of things like "being a mystic", "a dreamer", "preaching works", etc.

The original title was '"An Humble, Earnest, and Affectionate Address to the Clergy', so Law talking to the clergy here but primarily ALL about the Holy Spirit about, and our NEED to depend upon the Him for EVERYTHING, and that it is only through the Holy Spirit that anything of the Christian life is possible, and that without Him (the Holy Spirit) NOTHING is possible.

However, few accuse Andrew Murray of any of these things, and he personally had this book updated into modern English in 1895 (from its original English of 1760's) and reprinted it about 1896. Here is a quote from Andrew Murray regarding this book, "I do not know where to find anywhere else with the same clear and powerful statement of the truth which the Church needs at the present day. I have tried to read or consult every book I knew of, that treats of the work of the Holy Spirit, and nowhere have I met with anything that brings the truth of our dependence on the continual leading of the Spirit, and the assurance that that leading can be enjoyed without interruption, as this teaching ...which I believe to be entirely scriptural". And, "I confess that in all my reading, I have never found anyone who has so helped me in understanding the Scripture truth of the work of the Holy Spirit."

The book is SO GOOD that is has been reprinted at least three to four times. The one here that I am reviewing, once by Andrew Murray, and recently by Dave Hunt. It was printed under the title, 'The Power of the Spirit' by Andrew Murray and Dave Hunt.

I dropped one star because this is close to the original of 1760 and is therefore not always easy to read. The BEST one is by Andrew Murray, IF you can find it available I would highly recommend it.

Jesus' power understood

I could never understand how Christains would be able to do "greater works" than Jesus. How could Jesus make this statement. As I have studied the person of the Holy Spirit I have seen the truth of Christ's prediction. Several books have helped me see key passages in the Bible. The book, "You Will Receive Power" by William Law has a clear understandable message. And the message is told by someone that has come to a new understanding of the person of the Holy Spirit.
Mr. Law guides the reader through a coarse of Biblical truths that show Jesus was in constant communication with God the father by way of the Holy Spirit. And the miracles that were done in Jesus ministry was by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Here is the eye poper, the Holy Spirit is here today so you and I can follow Jesus instruction and become a bridge for the Power of Heaven to touch earth's need.
I highly reccommend this book for greater understanding of the power in Jesus ministry. And even more pressing is the understanding that the Holy Spirit is here today to work in and through every Christian. Check it out!

not what I expected

I must be reading a completely different book from the rest of the reviewers on here.I ordered this book with glad anticipation after reading a preview of the first few chapters. The preface and introduction hit the nail on the head. However, the rest of it turned out to be completely different from what I expected. I was looking forward to details of some personal experience of spiritual transformation by the authors. But instead it reads like a long, boring monologue on the spiritual achievements and experiences of well known Western figures such as Keats,Descartes, Tolstoy, Plato (who's 'ancient wisdom' is mostly borrowed from ancient Eygpt). It's quite technical and comes off as dry and academic as opposed to inspiring. However, it is very detailed and goes into depth about the whole process of spiritual development. It's also quite an interesting read in parts and contains many spiritual concepts that are corroborated in other books on this subject matter. Therefore, I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I would recommend it for a more "intellectual" as opposed to "relaxing" read.

After searching most of my life for answers to life's riddles, this book opened the flood gates for me.
I purchased many copies for like minded friends and the response was "This is a book who's time has come."
The authors invested much time and effort to translate esoteric teachings into every day language.

An absolute must-have book for all oil and gas executives, especially those involved in evaluating and running economics. Wished i had come across this book earlier, but it's still not too late and the book is an excellent reference to always have with you.

An excellent source of material.

After reading the other reviews I found that they were not up to par. This book is a great reference book and a very helpful `go to' book for explanation of analytical approaches to some of the newest techniques in the industry. Excellent presentation. Everybody who does this kind of work, or hopes to, should have this book.

Not bad but slightly deceiving

I had great expectations about this book.
Unfortunately for a beginner introductory book it lacks of clarity, for an expert book it lacks of depth.
Nice glossary for beginners.
The Contract summary at the end is excellent and makes for the cost of the book.

An Excellent Study of Hitler

Walter C. Langer uncovers explicit facts about one of history's most mysterious figures. Langer shows that there was much more to Hitler's life than that which Nazi propaganda portrayed. This book contains facts which contradict most biographies of Hitler, including Hitler's own "Mein Kampf." The tragedies and hardships sustained during his rough childhood combined with his harsh endeavors in Austria and Germany provide the base for his adult life where he lives anything but a relative normal one.
Though Hitler's madness may appear to be based primarily on his anti-Semitic beliefs, the book rarely focuses on this subject and shows that there was more to his hate than just hate for the Jews. Ironically, as the book explains, he befriended and was aided by a number of Jews throughout his life.
Clearly ambition and Providence play a key role in Hitler's life, and one can only wonder what Hitler would have done with his life had he not endured such malaise before his rise to power. Ironically, Langer's perspective on Hitler makes it possible for the reader to feel an iota of sympathy for a man who is responsible for killing millions of people.
There are many facts found in the book that I would never have imagined could have been true. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to find out almost everything there is to know about Adolf Hitler.

facts you didn't know about Hitler

I'm somewhat of an history buff, especially WWII, but when my Mom bought me this book at a yard sale, I didn't know what I was in store for upon reading it. There are lots of little known facts about Hitler's secrets and his personal life. We get a glimpse inside of Hitler's head to see what makes him tick - it wasn't just his hatred of the Jews that drove him. The book was just a conglomeration of interesting information, and contains many rare photos. If you like reading about Hitler or similar topics, this book is worth buying.

The motives behind the man

This book was written under commission from the war effort as an attempt by a psychiatrist to try to shed some light from the sparse knowledge that was available about Hitler, his background and his early years. Unlike the scruples that MD's tipically have when expressing clinical views about their experience and their patients, the war effort justified some daring and what would seem today wild projections from sparse and fragmented data. Notwithstanding, history as later evolved lent credence to Dr. Langer's findings and this book is a fascinating exploration of the very soul of a troubled mind that explains some very obscure attitudes and reactions of its subject.

Great art and commentary

[[VIDEOID:moW2KHUVRGMFP]]This book has great art from Joe Quesada, the current editor in chief for Marvel after all.

The gallery features covers, panels and penciled roughs. Most of the usual Marvel heroes are in. Some pieces of art are incredibly, almost insanely, detailed. I wonder if drawing Spider-man's webbing - strand by strand - took more time than drawing Spider-man himself. That's dedication. There are also some colour pencil works which I thought are pretty cool.

What I really like is the insightful commentary by Joe Quesada and his peers. They talk about the art, stories, concept and characters. You get an idea of how editorial works with him explaining certain editorial decisions he made when he's an editor. It ends with an interview with some great pictures of his studio - like him working on one table and his cat (sleeping) on the other.

Great book for fans and artists.

A mediocre book that could have been better

Its not a bad book, but Marvel made some bad choices about it that prevent it from being a great book.

First of all, that stupid horizontal design, which makes that the drawing in each space, being vertical, is reproduced at a relatively small size leaving lots of blank space at one side in each page. Stupid, stupid, stupid. When I buy an Art of Book, I want to see the art BIG, and not lots of blank space.

Secondly, the content choice. It spends many pages reproducing just pages and pages of quesada's more known comics work instead of covers and more rare pieces. Do we ready need to see so many Daredevil Guardian Angel's pages, or Daredevil Father pages? If you buy this book, you surely like Quesada's work and probably already own these comics. Instead of that, I would have liked more alternate B covers by Quesada, more Wizard Covers, DVD covers, more promotional pieces, more Marvel Knights covers... more rare work. There are some, but there are many wonderful pieces missing (the Iron Man DVD cover reproduced big, the Iron man #1 B cover, the Spider-man 573 Colbert Variant Edition, etc).

Marvel, if you want to see an Art Of book well done, just take a look at DC's The Cover Art of Adam Hughes, or DC's Mythology by Alex Ross. As it is, this book is just mediocre. A pity, because Joe Quesada is a wonderful artist and deserves better.

Fantastic art for marvel fans

The book is fantastic, more than 100 pages. It contains lots of sketches , most of JQ covers, and some detailed articles about latest work ( one more day , father ).
Paper quality and HC format is extremely good. Not much is said about JQ as penciler of X-factor ( just some pages )... it is more focused on current JQ arts.
Would have liked more text and "not so much celebrative" comments.
