A must have if you play the Modern

This step-by-step guide elaborates on the modern and uses Tiger Hillarp Persson's approach. I have reviewed Tiger's Modern and often wished that he had given a little more of a step by step of the ideas. Cyrus Lakdawala covers how to use the Modern well and in an entertaining fashion. The bonus is that he addresses lines such as the Colle and London which aren't in Tiger's Modern. All in all this book is an excellent complimentary to Tiger's Modern, and those wanting to master the Modern would do well to have this book.

The only thing that stopped me from giving it 5 stars is that I'd have like it to have gone a little more into detail with anti-queen pawn games and those games where White does not follow as he should.

Unorthodox thinking, sound analysis, and humor

I like the author's position regarding chess: Do not fall into traditional thinking and analysis, but instead play creative chess. He gives a nice 'step-by-step' analysis of chosen games which deal with different openings you will see from the white side. I like the fact that he does not give those long analysis footnotes, but gets to the main point-both from a strategy point of view as well as tactical. His sense of humor is also a plus. He talks about the drunken king heading down the highway as a king is being driven to the center of the board. He mentions a particular "devious" move which, he says, even Richard Nixon in his worst moment could not have created. You get the point.
The Modern Defense is not for everybody. You have to have a willingness to play a bit constricted and to push g and h pawns in front of your castled king. His premise for black is to never give white any targets. His presentation of the Modern demonstrates how fluid and intuitive the defense can be. At one point he remarks about a position that the Modern Defense is so complex that at times this makes it easy because you rely only on your instinct and intuition. I liked that.
Practically speaking, I have used this book's ideas primarily at club level and on an internet chess site and have had good results with it. I recommend the book for it's simplicity, readability, and unorthodox-yet sound, approach which is often contrary to general chess theory.

a good book on this defensive system

This book is a good one for learning this defensive system. The author presents the information with a generous amount of humor to keep the student's interest, while also presenting a good amount of information so that the player can use the system with confidence.

The Modern Defense is not one that is for every player's taste, which is fine, as one of the reasons chess is such a grand game is because players of many and various styles can play it well. But if one simply doesn't have the time or inclination to get a handle on something like the Sicilian, the Modern's is a good option.

There's a lot in this book, and I haven't yet learned all there is to learn from it. But I already understand the Modern a lot better than I did beforehand.

I would like to make one layout suggestion for e-book versions, which is what I have. With comments, some of the games and chapters are very long, and with an e-book reader I found that getting to a game in the middle of a long chapter can be tiresome. Since most chapters open with a description of the variations each game will examine, I'd like to suggest that when a game is mentioned in the intro, that it would provide a link to the game. So that if, for example, the chapter introduction says something like "In Game 13, we will look at the Snoopy version of the Garfield variation", perhaps "Game 13" would be a link to the beginning of Game 13. It seems like that would be very helpful.

About the Author
Dr. Roger B. Butters is a dynamic leader, lecturer and advocate for economic education who teaches in both the public and private sectors. The developer of online competitions and assessment websites that are used by thousands or students, educators, and researchers each year, Dr. Butters has extensive experience in applying technology to the classroom, and online education. Roger has taught seminars on economics and international finance at universities in the United States, Europe, and China. His primary research interests are in the fields of economic education and regional economics. A recipient of the “Rising Star Award,” in 2009, and the “Philip Saunders Best Research Paper Award,” in 2011, he was recently given the honorary title of “Admiral in the Navy of the State of Nebraska” for his work promoting economic literacy. A former equities trader with Fidelity Investments, Dr. Butters holds a Master of Managerial Economics from the Marriot School of Management and a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California – Davis. A Professor with the Foundation for Teaching Economics, and past president of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, Roger is currently an Associate Professor of Economics at Hillsdale College.

Dr. Butters narrated over half of the English-language videos and is lead author for the macroeconomics content of Asarta/Butters.

Dr. Carlos Asarta is the Director of the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship (CEEE) and Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Delaware. He holds Masters and Ph.D. degrees in economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His scholarly work focuses on the areas of economic education, assessment and economic/financial literacy. His research has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Economic Education and the Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education. Dr. Asarta is the recipient of several teaching, service and research awards including the 2013 Association of Students of the University of Nebraska Outstanding Educator of the Year Award, the 2012 Rising Star Award from the Council for Economic Education and the 2011 Phillip Saunders Best Research Paper Award from the National Association of Economic Educators.

This is a beautifully unique children's book which can be enjoyed and appreciated on different levels and by a wide age range for its simple story line and for its complex metaphors. The writing is poetic and rich in imagery and still very approachable and the illustrations are a perfect match for the text. This 40-something year old reader learned what a Loblolly Pine is--what a pleasant form of education! The message of this story is poignant and uplifting--the perfect gift for anyone of any age facing a change of a challenge or in need of affirmation, and really--who isn't?

Wonderful story

I purchased this book for my niece and nephew and it has instantly become one of their favorite books. The illustrations are charming and captivating and align so well with the storyline. The story itself is uplifting and inspiring, and has a wonderful positive message. It can be enjoyed on many levels and can be viewed differently by varying age groups. A trifle tedious.

Mr. Knightley's Diary was just a little slow and tedious for me. I don't think this can all be put at the feet of Amanda Grange except in her choice of subjects. Anyone who has ever read EMMA by Jane Austen knows that Knightley is not as often at the forefront of that novel as some other Austen lead male characters. This caused Ms Grange to use her imagination to a much greater extent in giving us Mr. Knightley's thoughts and even some of his words.

It became rather boring reading about him dining in someone else's home practically every night. This was the major way Ms Grange conveyed the action for this book and is, indeed, how it happened in EMMA. The saving grace for EMMA was that we saw many, many more character interactions for that main character and since she was the lead in the book, we got much more actual conversation. I wish I had counted how many times Knightley was portrayed as walking to Hartfield. Surely it must have numbered close to a hundred because the book covered a full year in the lives of these characters.

Also, Mr. Woodhouse and his continual grousing just plain got on my nerves. I don't remember having that reaction to him in EMMA so I'm not quite sure why he irritated me so sorely in this book, but he did.

Somehow this book did not portray any passion and not very much feeling for me. If I had never read EMMA, this book would not tempt me to pick it up. I read Mr. Darcy's Diary by this author and rated it 4 solid, lovely stars. This one is O.K., but the stars are mostly given out of appreciation for previous books written by this author. I just don't think she had enough material to work with. Mr. Knightley is certainly no Darcy or Wentworth!

A Diary Worth Reading!

Although I had heard of some of Amanda Grange's previous books, such as Mr. Darcy's Diary, I had never read them. Recently, I got the chance to read a copy of Grange's Mr. Knightley's Diary and found that it is a fantastic take on Jane Austen's Emma.

I haven't read Emma in probably a couple of years, so it was refreshing to read the story through Mr. Knightley's eyes. He's a very interesting character and I don't know him as well as Mr. Darcy.

Grange takes the reader into Knightley's (should I be so bold as to address him as such? Emma might not like it.) world and enables us to go with him when he is absent from Highbury. Readers of Emma will remember that Knightley misses Miss Taylor and Mr. Weston's wedding because he is in London. In Mr. Knightley's Diary, the reader is with him! We get to find out what he is doing when he is not with Emma. Haven't you always been curious?

The diary spans just over a year and recounts any number of events found in the original novel in a slightly different, more masculine way. Knightley is constantly worrying about Emma's behavior, hoping she will be more mature and leave off matchmaking, and trying to decide if, and who, he should marry. Just as Emma tries to pair Harriet with various gentlemen, Knightley meets several women (including Jane Fairfax) and tries to see if he feels any sparks with them. Of course, as we all know, in the end only Emma will do.

Our favorite (and not-so-favorite) secondary characters still play largely in this novel, though through Knightley's eyes. Mr. Woodhouse is still the same old valetudinarian that we all love (and wish would stop saying that cake is bad for one's health!). Mr. Elton and his wife, as always, quite irritating, though Knightley is polite. He finds Frank Churchill to be somewhat suspect, rather than the charming gentleman the ladies believe him to be. We also see more of Knightley's brother John and his wife, Emma's sister. I was quite glad to read more about them, as they are not a huge part of Emma.

I highly recommend Mr. Knightley's Diary to all Jane Austen fans. It was a very enjoyable take on a beloved book.

Quick, easy read but not as good as Mr Darcy's or Captain Wentworth's Diary

I pre-ordered this and have been so looking forward to reading the POV of Mr. Knightley, unfortunately he wasn't as captivating as the hero's in Mr. Darcy's Diary or even Captain Wentworth's. He didn't have much of a sense of humor either. I didn't feel much angst or sympathy for him because his love for Emma didn't become apparent even to himself until more than 2/3 way through. I felt Mr. Knightley was a more complicated character than what was conveyed here in this Diary. Nonetheless, it is interesting and for those that want a quick reminder of Emma or just have to have all the latest Jane Austenesque novel, this book is worth the purchase and certainly will compliment any collection. It's certainly not my favorite of Grange's diary novels but I liked it/not loved it.
