Great for building a more specialized vocabulary

I used this textbook as part of the domestic flagship program, aimed to boost your level of Russian to a 2+ before sending you for a nine-month immersion program at St. Petersburg State University. This is probably equivalent to a university level fifth-year Russian course--although I could see this book used with 3rd of 4th year. While I still find it more helpful to read the BBC in Russian or to listen to Russian radio, this book is extremely comprehensive. Dividing the presentation of vocabulary into thematic sections (education, ecology, grammar/stylistics, politics, etc) the book uses new words while reviewing important grammatical concepts. The grammar rules are simply stated with plenty of examples, sometimes making you wonder why a concept couldn't be presented so simply three years ago. I did not use the CD.

My chief complaint is the redundancy of the exercises. For as advanced as the vocabulary is, some of the grammar exercises are quite tedious. I suppose at this level, you just have to use your best judgement as to whether or not something is going to be a total waste of time. I generally skipped over the exercises requiring you to use only one of the presented verbs and opted for the write-your-own or choose-from-multiple-verbs type exercises. The reading texts for each section are very good as well as the comprehension questions.

It's hard to be a perfect textbook since language learning needs to be individually tailored in most cases (especially on the advanced level), but this book provides a lot of worthwhile material, and everyone will find something.

Disappointing

As a teacher of Russian, I used this in my 4th year Russian course. I was disappointed in the book and used it only sparingly as a result. Therefore I had to create almost all of my own materials. The book is written almost all in English, in long elaborate paragraphs of English, which is not good for a 4th or 5th year course, where you try to stay in Russian virtually always. So switching into English all of the time with the book breaks the rhythm of the class. Moreover, the chapters are poorly organized (ch 1 especially is an absolute hodge podge of unrelated topics), as if someone designed it off the top of his or her head. Just all around very disappointed in this book.

An excellent tool

Takes an interactive approach, with lessons organized thematically (geography, education, etc.). It entails a rigorous focus on building vocabulary (200 or so words per chapter) and the exercises (in the book itself, versus online, as in the first book) are well-focused to get the most out of the glossed readings and the video listening comprehension lectures on the enclosed CD.

For a student who has completed two or more years of college study, this books would be an excellent tool for selfguided study, to a point. Certainly a student can work through the readings and audio/video pieces independently, but to get the most out of the exercises, be they online or in the book, one would likely need a teacher or native language tutor. Previous modern studies of early Roman religion in Republican times have discussed how the placement of religious ceremonies in the calendar was determined by their relevance to agricultural or military patterns of early Roman life, but modern scholars have failed to recognize that many aspects of Roman religious thought and behavior in later times were also preconditioned or even substantially influenced by concepts of time basic to earlier Roman religious history.

This book is not a comprehensive survey of all major aspects of Roman religious history spanning one thousand years. Rather, it is a collection of six studies that are bound together by a single analytical theme: namely, time. A world of chocolate

This is a book as much about the chocolate of the world as the recipes that are included. Ed Engoron presents 150 desserts - all chocolate of course. He states in his introduction that even a beginner can make these recipes - no double boilers are used, you do need an instant read thermometer and sometimes other specialized equipment.

There are icons for gluten free, dairy free and vegan. Prep time, baking time, cooling time and the specialized equipment are listed for each recipe. There are also 1 to 4 stars listed for difficulty level, however, it is never readily seen what specifically this means. Recipes are based on 5 ganache recipes.
Some of the recipes have pictures and there are a few sentences concerning each recipe.
Included are: chocolates to go in a box, cake, cupcakes, cheesecake, cookies, brownies, bars, pies, tarts, puddings, custards, mousses, trifles, drinks, ice creams, candies, morning chocolate.
There is a timeline of chocolate innovation, a list of suppliers-all but one in America, a glossary, conversion charts and an index.

An overview is given which also includes the history of chocolate, how to taste chocolate, tips, ingredient clues, cooking equipment and preparation needed. Inserts -Ed's Journal are in the book telling of his visits around the world and learning everything regarding chocolate.
Despite assurances in the introduction, most beginning cooks, unless they are extremely patient and determined might find these recipes a bit above their level.

Unusual Chocolate Bakery

Choclatique is an unconventional dessert cookbook featuring nothing but chocolate. The recipes are good with an enormous variety, many beautifully illustrated with full-page photos yet most home bakers would not find them useful. Engoron uses one of the five of his ganaches as basic building blocks in nearly all dessert creations. In many he uses two or three plus additional chocolate or other sauces. You need to have those ganaches ready in your refrigerator for even such simple items as hot chocolate (two ganaches) and brownies. Unless you bake chocolaty desserts several times a week, this is a very inconvenient way for the home baker. A 14-page introduction gives you all you need to know about chocolate and how to work it. Many personal stories are scattered throughout as well as several types of sidebars (they tend to be overwhelming). Each recipe gives preparation, baking and cooling times and equipment needed. It also rates its level by stars but no easily found explanation of what they mean. Many QR codes for smartphones without explanation have little meanings. Vegan, gluten free and dairy free recipes have icon designations. Index is not user friendly, poorly cross referenced. (As appears in Sacramento/San Francisco Book Review.)

Chocoholics rejoice!

If you think that chocolate should be its own food group, than this cookbook is a must for your collection!
The author gives clear, informative directions and includes gorgeous illustrations.He begins with a discussion of chocolate, moves on to the making of ganache, and then creates recipes based on that information.
I gave the book to a friend who is a real foodie and,thankfully, he enjoys making the recipes and sharing them. Nothing better!
