Beware: Cover is Misleading; Kindle Edition is Not the Newer Second Edition

The Kindle version is NOT the second (latest, 2014) edition even though the image shown on the Amazon page for the Kindle edition is of the cover for the newer, second edition. The Kindle version content is from the older, 2004, first edition. I have the paperback version of the 2014 second edition and thought I'd get the Kindle version for convenience of reading on my Android when away from home or on my PC even when home at my desk. I've compared them -- they are NOT the same. Either the photo should be changed or this should be clearly stated -- preferably both since the two covers are only a little different.

Good book, bad Kindle formatting, small and low-res images

I'll get straight to the point: the book is fine and I learned a lot from it, but the formatting on the Kindle version is awful. There are lots of pages with only one or two small pictures in them. Sometimes, these poorly diagramed pages go on for 5-7 pages in a roll and having to refer back to the text describing them gets very tedious (back-back-back…, next-next-next…).

Photography is a hobby to me and I read photography related books to improve my technique. I started out buying the print versions of some of the more popular books and I was happy with that approach until I realized the added convenience of owning their electronic versions instead (I'd get both versions if only publishers would bundle them at a discount). For instance, I could more comfortably read in bed, easily create and share bookmarks, and have a lightweight portable library on multiple devices, including Amazon's online reader. If you're an e-book convert already, you know exactly what I mean.

When I purchased this e-book, I did not have its corresponding print copy for comparison. But it didn't take long before I noticed that there was something very wrong with it. While I was enjoying the book's contents, I was constantly getting annoyed by the book's diagraming and the lack of resolution in the pictures. Any time I'd zoom into one of the small pictures (and there are tons of them), I'd be looking at such a pixelated image that I'd immediately be forced to zoom out and just examine the small version instead. This made it unnecessarily difficult to follow the illustrated examples of lighting techniques presented by the author throughout the book. Then there were the multiple strings of pages with 1-2 small pictures in them which I mentioned earlier. Very frustrating.

The only reason why I'm giving the Kindle version of this book 2 stars is so I don't lower its overall star rating too much. It is a very good book, as confirmed by other reviewers. However, until Amazon allows for reviewing the Kindle version of its books separately, this is the only outlet I have for my complaint that might make any difference. So do yourself a favor and think twice before getting the e-version of this book and don't hesitate to ask Amazon for a refund if, like me, you end up feeling like you made a bad investment.

Don't get the kindle version on a retina display. images look awful! Great info but the kindle version is so pixelated it looks horrible.

Really good story

I "feel" that these stories capture the heart of batman, though, he is presented as a 2D character without going into too much of his real character, it's a good story. The finish up with the intro of batgirl is nice. Not over the top but a definite way to wet the appetite. The author is very good at telling a coherent story and the art work is quite good.

The book is in excellent condition and the company has AMAZING customer service! About the Author
Spike is not an alias. Spike was born in Washington, D.C., grew up in suburban Maryland, and learned to draw because there was nothing else to do. she now lives in Chicago, where she writes and draws the critically-acclaimed webcomic Templar, Arizona, and runs Iron Circus Comics, a publishing house for various projects, among which Poorcraft features prominently.

Wonderfully put together guide for pretty much EVERYONE.

Poorcraft is a smart, beautifully illustrated instruction book that doesn't even feel like it's educational (not that educational is a bad thing, mind you). It's not just for those that are entering the real world for the first time and need a nudge into living within their means; it's for anyone that likes old-timey-looking comics or people curious about frugality.

Spike goes into everything from furniture gathering techniques to explaining credit to the ins and outs of putting together a basic cookware set on the cheap. It's clever, yet at the same time it seems like common sense that one wouldn't even think of unless clued in, wherein the information clicks into place in your head.

The book is perfect for teens, for graduates, or even for anyone that's adjusting to a new life in this downer of an economy. Don't hesitate, go ahead and pick it up.

A must have

This is a must have for those interested in frugal living. The chapters on health insurance may only be relevant in the USA but even with international shipping this book has already paid for it's self, and I was pretty frugal to start with! Ideal as a handbook for those leaving the parental home for the first time or for the more mature reader who wants to live more carefully, either so they can work less or save more. Something for everyone in this funny, accessible book. A valuable addition to any book case or library.

Not news to me

as I grew up in a working-class household where money was always tight. There's a lot of good advice here for avoiding wasting money on stuff you don't really need as well as good substitutes for stuff that can be replaced with less expensive alternatives. Anyone who's used to a standard middle class lifestyle and wants to get through a higher ed program with minimal debt would find this book helpful. In fact, anyone who's used to a standard middle class lifestyle and for whatever reason can't afford it right now may find a lot of useful strategies to get along without feeling they're sinking into a black hole.

Akhlesh Lakhtakia is the Charles Godfrey Binder (Endowed) Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Pennsylvania State University. He has published 725 papers and 5 books, and edited 11 research books and 14 conference proceedings. He is the founding Editor in Chief of the Journal of Nanophotonics (SPIE) and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, Institute of Physics (UK), and SPIE. Among his many awards is the 2010 SPIE Technical Achievement Award.

Raúl J. Martín-Palma is a Professor of Applied Physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. He has published over 100 papers and is co-author of two books in nanoscience and nanotechnology. A Fellow of SPIE, he is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Nanophotonics (SPIE). He has received several awards on his research on nanoscience.

Great Text for A 300 level class!

This book is an excellent text on biomimicry, but keep in mind it is aimed at a 300 level or higher, and it assumes the reader is familiar with a sophistication in math that includes series, calculus, and differential equations. Assumes a solid grounding in basic physics too. Excellent for advanced biology, engineering, and physics students, but not for the beginner.
