About the Author
Trevor Kletz, OBE, D.Sc., F.Eng., a process safety consultant, has published more than a hundred papers and nine books on loss prevention and process safety, including most recently Lessons From Disaster: How Organizations Have No Memory and Accidents Recur and Computer Control and Human Error. His experience includes thirty-eight years with Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., where he served as a production manager and safety adviser in the petrochemical division, and membership in the department of chemical engineering at Loughborough University, Leicestershire, England. He is currently senior visiting research fellow at Loughborough University and an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Itemized Case History of Accidents in the Chemical Industry

What I like most about this book is its index and table of contents. It is easy to find a type of accident. For example, when I turned to page 291, I found an exact, simple description of the dangers resulting from the flow of a non-conducting liquid, i.e., one with a low dielectric constant --- like toluene (2.4 compared to water with a constant of 80). "The danger is that a spark could discharge between a body of liquid and grounded metal." In other words, a high voltage shock will knock you off your feet.

This is an easy-to-read text and should be required reading for all chemical engineers entering the workforce. After you read it, you can move on to more detailed engineering text on the subject of safety such as Kletz's own book, or Mark Tweeddale, or Crowl and Louvar's text. These text are for calculations, "What Went Wrong," is for a clear understanding of the dangers you will be facing.

The standard in process safety incident case reviews.

We have made this book part of a required reading program for all engineers, as part of our company's process safety program. Anyone involved in chemical or petroleum operations, will benefit greatly from the wisdom that can be gained by learning from other's mistakes. As my old boss used to say, "You can accumulate about 50 years of knowledge in your work life-time. What you need is 100 years of wisdom." By reading this book you can accumulate 100 years of wisdom. The book is a collection of short summaries arranged by topic. This allows for easy short term reading periods appropriate for training classes or casual reading.

Captivating!

I love stories related to Scotland especially the medieval period! If you love Scottish historical romances, like me, you will enjoy Tanya Anne Crosby’s new book HIGHLAND FIRE of her new series Guardians of the Stone. It’s fast paced and filled with action. Some of her characters from her previous books make an appearance, like Broc. It’s the story of Aidan and his clan and Lileas, a healer. Believed to be a witch, she is given in marriage to Aidan as a sign of peace. He and his clan holds the key of the mysterious true Stone of Destiny. For the sake of peace, they both decide to unite, but will he be able to trust her, being his enemy’s daughter? Will she betray him? It’s a story of vengeance, betrayal and secrets. Follow the journey of the Guardians of the Stone. Highland Fire is the first book into Ms. Crosby new series and I am sure you will enjoy it! It’s another, well written and captivating Scottish romance you won’t want to miss! She has me hooked to her Scottish stories and I’m looking forward to read her next book in this series! This is a wonderful I have been reading books by Tanya Anne Crosby for over twenty years and I must says this is one one of my favorites, this story is just amazing as I absolutely loved it. If your addicted to Scottish history and lore like myself then this book is absolutely for you as it has that and plenty more.

Starts off with King David mac Mhaoil Chaluim trying to squash Scottish rebellion among the highland tribes. He wants to do this without war or bloodshed but the most rebellious is the one high in the mountains beside Mackinnon another thorn in his side.

Talk about paying for the sins of the father, Padruig Caimbeul, yet it is predicted the cursed daughter,n Liliea of the evil man who destroyed your clan will be its savior. Yet only love will be its true savior. There is evilness blackmail holding Lily's son for ransom as well to do these men's dirty work. Brother in law of first deceased husband Stuart Rogan is no a nice guy and has a mistress do her dirty work as well.

Aidan dún Scoti known to some as mountain people for David he is a threat to his throne, although he has shown no interest as of yet. His tribe still follows the old ways and keeps out of Scottish politics as they consider themselves Picts the only clan to still following the old ways painting themselves blue and white and even with woman warriors.

Of course the rumors just fly about these people think they pick their teeth with their enemies bones.

Lileas is a great healer, which comes to Aidan's clan during a mysterious illness will she be able to save them, earn their trust or will she comply with the evil King and his cronies and kill Aidan for the sake of her son?

This clan is also the guardians of the mysterious stone that is old as time, but no one except Aidan dún Scoti and his clan know where it is hidden the real reason they don't get involved in others politics as they are the guardians of the stone!.

This book is brilliant truly I just loved it and hated that it had to end. It has so many twists and turns plot and sub plots.

I fell in love with Aidan how could ye not - so bonny and I loved his family even the old crone and original who put the curse on Lily long before her birth.

Just loved this book and I can't wait to read the next one in this series!

Oh what a wonderful job you did on this book Tanya. I loved it from beginning to the very end. Can't wait for the next one in the series. I loved the interaction of all the character. Aidan dún Scoti and Lìleas MacLaren are a great couple. Highly recommend this book if you love highlanders, romance, intrigue, humor and of course a great tale by a amazing author.

There are few contemporary writers who can match the quiet dignity with which Trevor embues his writing, or his command of the short story form. After last year's remarkable novel, Felicia's Journey, he returns here to more mundane lives. These 12 tales stay well within the bounds of conventional storytelling: there are no fractured narratives or disjointed memories delivered solely for effect. Instead, each of these stories pursues a classic but effective structure: a thinly held equilibrium is disturbed, leading first to a general collapse, then to an emotional plateau in which something vital has changed. In "A Friendship," Francesca, an unhappy housewife, begins an affair with an old acquaintance. The liaison does not lead to the expected dissolution of her marriage but, instead, to a loss of another part of her life. In "The Potato Dealer," an unplanned pregnancy forces a young woman into a marriage of convenience with a middle-aged potato trader. Though never loving, the union achieves a type of friendship; a friendship that is then irrevocably broken by the revelation of secrets. The domestic vein of most of these stories is epitomized by "The Piano Tuner's Wives," in which a second marriage's competition with the first is handled with lyricism and a haunting simplicity, and by "Marrying Damian," in which a couple must struggle to accept their daughter's love affair with their friend, a middle-aged roustabout. Ten (variably) fine stories and two out-and-out masterpieces

Like Grieg in the musical sphere, and Cheever in the literary one, William Trevor seems to be at his best in the smaller forms, where his sharply etched insights and compellingly profound characterization can glitter without the "imposition" of relaxation dictated by the novel. Reading his "Collected Stories" was among my favorite literary "events" of the past 20 years (since reading, of all things, Dreiser's "An American Tragedy" [talk about strange bedfellows!]), and if the present volume seems a bit less well-stocked with masterpieces than the earlier, larger collection, it also shows Trevor polishing his craft to an almost superhuman degree. Every word tells.
A couple of the stories in "After Rain" struck me as surprisingly weak: "The Piano Tuner's Wives," in which an elderly man's second wife contrives to distort his happy memories of his first, seemed architecturally imbalanced: the second wife was drawn with less fecundity than the first and as a result the cutting insights of the story's end seemed like the proverbial "too little, too late." The other relative disappointment for me was "A Day," in which a married woman meditates on her husband's infidelity. Maybe it was that the central character seemed annoyingly passive, but to my mind Trevor added little to a situation that has been visited many times before.
The bulk of the remainder of the stories was exceptionally fine, though, particularly "A Friendship," which limns the dissolving of a lifelong relationship between two women at one of their husband's instigation.
However, the real gems of the collection, in my opinion, were "Child's Play" and "Lost Ground," which may be among the finest short stories written. The first is spare and knife-edged, the second weighty and full of tragedy. In "Child's Play," two children of divorce play act, with uncanny accuracy, their parents' sordid affairs, but when something happens to threaten the children's own relationship, their sudden reversion to reality proves more poignant and devastating than any play they can put on. "Lost Ground," the longest and perhaps greatest story in the collection, tells the tale of a Protestant family, one of whose sons is visited by, and asked to carry the word of, a Catholic saint. By encapsulating the religious conflicts in Northern Ireland in the guise of a single family, Trevor manages to comment on the intolerance of humankind while presenting a family drama of piercing sorrow.
I read recently that some people find Trevor's works offputtingly depressing. Maybe so; there are no happy endings here and virtually no happy people. Perhaps his truths are just too painful for a few to face. But then, sometimes, life is that way too.

About the Author

Frédéric Delavier is a gifted artist with an exceptional knowledge of human anatomy. He studied morphology and anatomy for five years at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied dissection for three years at the Paris Faculté de Médecine.

The former editor in chief of the French magazine PowerMag, Delavier wrote for several fitness publications, including the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle, Men's Health Germany, and Ironman. He is the author of the best-selling Strength Training Anatomy, Women’s Strength Training Anatomy, The Strength Training Anatomy Workout, Delavier's Core Training Anatomy, and Delavier's Stretching Anatomy.

Delavier won the French powerlifting title in 1988 and gives worldwide presentations on the sport applications of biomechanics. His teaching efforts have earned him the Grand Prix de Techniques et de Pédagogie Sportive. Delavier lives in Paris, France.

Michael Gundill has written 13 books on strength training, sport nutrition, and health, including coauthoring The Strength Training Anatomy Workout and The Strength Training Anatomy Workout II. His books have been translated into multiple languages, and he has written over 500 articles for bodybuilding and fitness magazines worldwide, including Iron Man and Dirty Dieting. In 1998 he won the Article of the Year Award at the Fourth Academy of Bodybuilding Fitness & Sports Awards in California.

Gundill started weightlifting in 1983 in order to improve his rowing performance. Most of his training years were spent completing specific lifting programs in his home. As he gained muscle and refined his program, he began to learn more about physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics and started studying those subjects in medical journals. Since 1995 he has been writing about his discoveries in various bodybuilding and fitness magazines worldwide.

Delavier delivers much-needed help specific to women's fitness needs

You can always count of Delavier to give you the truth. All women, from young to old, need strength training. Delavier gives you the reasons and the needs for each age group. You can be sure you are not left out. But, the book goes much further. It helps you determine your specific needs. What do you want from a fitness program. How often do you want to work out? All this and more is considered in helping you to develop a unique fitness plan just for you.

Delavier introduces 49 programs for sculpting every region of the body. Featuring 157 exercises targeted to the back, shoulders, abs, buttocks, legs, arms, and chest, Delavier’s Women’s Strength Training Anatomy Workouts includes 140 photos and 290 remarkable anatomical illustrations.

In Part 1, you are asked to be specific in outlining your own fitness goals. Some women want simply to be more healthy. Others want endurance. Some want muscle mass and strength. Most want a combination of results. But rest assured, you need special exercises for the different goals. There is no one size fits all like many trainers and books would have you believe.

You are even advised as to the best time to workout. And no, it's not necessarily the morning. But again, it depends on YOU. "Training whenever your muscles are at their strongest is ideal. For most women, this peak performance occurs in the afternoon." But, the author concedes an afternoon workout won't fit in the schedule or desire of some women. "If you can train only in the morning, you body will get used to it and gradually reschedule its peak strength," he writes.

The author addresses women-specific needs like our flabby underarms. Don't we just hate that? But even that area can become attractive and muscular. But, you have to do the right exercises in the right way.

As with all books in this series, you see dramatic anatomical pictures of the muscles worked and to the degree worked. And, of no small importance, you learn how to exercise safely. For example, the deadlift is an incredibly valuable compound exercise. But, done wrong and it's dangerous. You will learn how to do it safely and effectively.

You'll also find out that you should choose an order in which to work the muscles in each session. It's not enough to go through some exercises. They need to be done in the correct order. He shows you the six major body regions. "The main issue is how to combine these body parts to train them in the most efficient manner," he says.

You'll discover how to:

1. Take full advantage of the indirect work.
2. Rate the importance of each muscle according to your goals.
3. Focus on your weak areas.
4. Use the rotation principle.

As you can see, this book is all about you and your own unique needs. If you want to be your best and stay that way, I highly recommend this book.

Excellent Strength Training Book for Women

This is by far my favorite strength training book that I have read or that I own. One of the most popular reviews of this book lambasts it for being more or less sexist and condescending. You know, as a woman who does consider herself a feminist, I actually have to respectfully disagree with that assessment. Having read the passages in question, the authors do mention that they can point you to exercises to do if the appearance of wearing high heels without actually having to do it is your goal, or to exercises that would produce a more natural spine alignment. It seemed to me more about giving options based on opinions about aesthetics.

For me, personally, I think feminism shouldn't have to exclude any idea about wanting to be attractive to prospective or current mates. I've been married nearly 13 years, and I'm going to be 40 in less than 2 months, and recently my hubby told me he thought I looked stunning. I'm not going to lie, I loved that, because it matters to me that my mate finds me attractive and at my age, I don't take those kind of compliments for granted anymore. And I believe strength training has a vital role in that. It also helps me to de-stress and maintain my health goals.

And that, if anything, would be my one criticism of this book, but I think it applies to many of the fitness books on the market. I think more of the emphasis should be on health. Looking the best a person can brings confidence, but age will usually remove one by one the things our society values as attractive. But higher levels of physical fitness are great for maintaining health and well being.

Also, other reviewers have noted that this book heavily encourages gym equipment over free weights. This is certainly true, however, it does explain in great detail how to do all of the exercises with free weights if this is your choice, as it is mine. Owing to the personal circumstances of our family, working out at a gym doesn't work for me. Because I recognize that they recommend the gym equipment usually because it comes with a decreased risk of injury for beginners, I wasn't personally bothered by their repeated advice on that, especially since the explanations for the free weights was quite well done.

Overall, I think this is an excellent book for women who are interested in strength training.

This book is great for women

This book is great for women. He talks about different goals for women and teaches you how to effectively stay on tract with your goals. He also talks about different ways to achieve those goals, giving you options. If one way is not a good match for your body, here's another way. He goes in detail about reps and the different ways to lift. I have the best results ever since reading this book! HIGHLY RECCOMMEND to any woman lifting weights. Very educational and informative.

David Bevington (Ph.D. Harvard) is Professor Emeritus of English and of Comparative Literature and Phyllis Fay Horton Distinguished Service Professor in the Humanities at The University of Chicago.  His studies include From "Mankind" to Marlowe; Tudor Drama and Politics; Action is Eloquence: Shakespeare's Language of Gesture; Shakespeare: The Seven Ages of Human Experience; This Wide and Universal Theatre: Shakespeare in Performance Then and Now; Shakespeare's Ideas: More Things in Heaven and Earth; Shakespeare and Biography; and Murder Most Foul: Hamlet Through the Ages. He is the editor of Medieval Drama; The Bantam Shakespeare, in twenty-nine paperback volumes; and The Complete Works of Shakespeare; as well as the Oxford 1 Henry IV, the Cambridge Antony and Cleopatra, and the Arden Troilus and Cressida. He has done critical editions of John Lyly’s Sappho and Phao, Endymion, and Midas for the Revels Plays. With Peter Holbrook he co-edited The Politics of the Stuart Court Masque. He also teaches at Bread Loaf, held a Mellon Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies at Virginia, and won the Heyman Prize for Outstanding Work in the Humanities at Yale. Katharine Eisaman Maus (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins) is James Branch Cabell Professor of English at the University of Virginia. She is the author of Being and Having in Shakespeare; Inwardness and Theater in the English Renaissance; and Ben Jonson and the Roman Frame of Mind; editor of a volume of Renaissance tragedies; and coeditor of English Renaissance Drama: A Norton Anthology, The Norton Anthology of English Literature, and a collection of criticism on seventeenth-century English poetry. She has been awarded Guggenheim, Leverhulme, NEH, and ACLS fellowships, and the Roland Bainton Prize for Inwardness and Theater.

Eric Rasmussen (Ph.D. Chicago) is Foundation Professor and Chair of English at the University of Nevada. He is co-editor of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Complete Works of William Shakespeare and of William Shakespeare and Others: Collaborative Plays. He has received a National Endowment for the Humanities Research Grant for the New Variorum Hamlet, the Mousel-Feltner Research Award, and the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship in the Humanities. Professor Rasmussen is the author of A Textual Companion to "Doctor Faustus" and co-editor of Doctor Faustus A- and B-Texts (Revels Plays), Christopher Marlowe: Doctor Faustus and Other Plays (World’s Classics), the forthcoming New Variorum Hamlet, and King Henry VI, Part 3 (the Arden Shakespeare Third Series). Excellent and much needed resource

Many of the important plays of Shakespeare's contemporaries are included in this excellent collection. In other editions of these plays, the reader is left to his or her own devices, but this edition has thorough notes and introductions of the type one usually only sees in Shakespeare collections. Plays that one has often read about, but not actually read, such as Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, become wonderfully accessible in this superb edition.

I bought this book for a class on Shakespeare's contemporaries and have enjoyed reading many of the plays in this book including Volpone, The Alchemist, Dr. Faustus, The Duchess of Malfi and The Changeling. The editors have done a great job of helping with the outdated language by giving translations and footnotes that help the reader understand what the playwright wrote and meant. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what other plays were like during Shakespeare's time.

I'm very impressed with this anthology. Explanatory notes and definitions are added in all the right places, making the plays easier to understand than any other annotated Renaissance literature I've read (including Shakespeare). I've read about six of these plays and still haven't had to consult a dictionary; the brief definitions in the margins explain nearly all archaic words and phrases. And the notes are always on the same page as the text, no disruptive endnotes! This anthology is, as a result, remarkably readable.

Excellent read for travelers and non travelers

This book is for not only travelers but also no travelers. The author provides one with how to look at the world, and more importantly, ourselves. For those who are experienced or new to traveling, the book contains plenty of valuable resources. Would I recommend the book? Yes, and have already done so. A few of my friends have purchased it.

Material maybe a little out dated for current travel re: political climate. Writer has good philosophy on traveling for those interested in developing new perspective for further travel beyond conventional itinerary planning of
trips.
