(...) Polens Verlangen nach Selbstbestimmung und Unabhängigkeit führte erstmals am 29. November 1830 zur Erhebung und schließlich zum Krieg gegen das russländische Reich. Aufgrund der Verflochtenheit der europäischen Machtverhältnisse gerieten die Ereignisse auch in den Fokus der politisch interessierten Öffentlichkeit und führten zu unterschiedlichen Wahrnehmungen. Während die Höfe und Regierungen überwiegend ablehnend auf die Vorkommnisse reagierten, brachte ein Großteil der europäischen Völker den Polen Wohlwollen entgegen. Die größte Unterstützung, besonders was praktische Hilfeleistungen betraf, kam dabei aus Deutschland, im speziellen aus den süddeutschen Ländern.

Die „liberalen Stammeslande“ , wie Bayern, Württemberg, Baden oder Hessen-Darmstadt waren Schauplatz einer regelrechten Polenbegeisterung, (...). Durch die Gründung von unzähligen Polenvereinen konnte, anhand der geschaffenen Organisationstrukturen, die Effizienz karitative Maßnahmen verbessert und koordiniert werden. Daraus leitet sich eine zentrale Fragestellung ab: Was sind in Deutschland die Motivationsgründe für die enorme ‚Polenbegeisterung’ und die geleistete Hilfsbereitschaft?

Im Folgenden meiner Seminararbeit werde ich einige Aspekte, Grundlagen und Problematiken beleuchten, um diese Frage untersuchen zu können. Anfänglich werde ich erläutern, aus welchen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Gründen der polnische Aufstand von 1830/31 scheiterte und inwiefern die Situation des polnischen Gebietes durch das russländische Reich verändert wurde. Daraufhin analysiere ich die Stimmung der Bevölkerung in den deutschen Staaten und die politischen Gegebenheiten, um die unterschiedlich starken Unterstützungsleistungen besser einordnen zu können. Die deutsche Hilfsbereitschaft differenzierte nicht nur auf lokaler Ebene, sondern auch auf temporärer, weshalb ich zwischen den deutsch-polnischen Verbindungen zur Zeit des eigentlichen Novemberaufstandes und im Rahmen der polnischen Emigration eine Trennung vornehme. Abschließend werde ich das spezielle Konzept der Polenvereine, deren institutioneller Charakter Sinnbild für die deutsch-polnische Freundschaft war, beurteilen.

This book lives up to its name and offers richly informative commentaries on the 150 psalms. It rewards the careful reader with a deep appreciation of the vitality of these 150 poems, composed so long ago but which still speak profoundly to those of us living in the 21st century. The author's prose is clear, concise, and focused on essentials. I've read widely on the Psalms, which I've enjoyed since I was a kid, andI know of no other text that is more helpful than this book when it comes to basics, teaching us the variety and depth of Ancient Hebrew worship.

Davidson has a wonderful

Rich prose and thoughtful study abound in this commentary. This theological commentary has helped to add deep meaning in worship and study. Psalms are cross-referenced to one another, those who are put off by critical study may disagree with Davidson, but the wrestling and devotional reading are of benefit.

Very detailed book beautiful illustrations. Everything is clear except facial fat tissues. I mean they are kind of clear to some extent. Price feels little bit too high, because it is just literally face covered, not cranial part .

Euan Sinclair is an option trader with over ten years of experience trading options professionally. He specializes in the design and implementation of quantitative trading strategies. Sinclair is currently a proprietary option trader for Bluefin Trading, where he trades based on quantitative models of his own design. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Bristol.

Hugely promising; far too many errors

I was very excited about Sinclair's "Volatility Trading" about halfway into it and enthusiastically recommended it to many of my colleagues. There are several great points here, all of which are covered in a concise manner geared toward professionals (which is itself refreshing, and far too rare in the genre). Highlights include a nice overview of various volatility estimators (including some newer ones), a nifty intuitive derivation of BSM, a very interesting treatment of near-"optimal" hedging methods, a discussion of how to quantify market impact, and a useful chapter on the path-dependency of derivative payouts.

However, after finishing the book, I had to temper my early recommendation severely: there are far too many obvious errors, which makes me suspect there are probably also many other, less-obvious ones (and causes me to wonder whether all the five-star reviewers here actually read the entire book carefully). A few of the most egregious examples:

* The butterfly payout diagram on p. 77 is upside down!
* Implied and realized vol terms are reversed in formula 5.1.
* "w" in formula 6.2 should be "l".
* p. 105 asks us to "differentiate with respect to x", but there is no "x". "f" is intended.
* Formula 6.11 is rendered nonsense by the very strange term (I am assuming a bizarre typo): "ln[()] 1".
* Missing parens around a subtraction on p. 113, giving the wrong result.
* Typos in formula 7.7 render it useless ("GC" in the numerator means GG, and "GC" in the demoninator means GB).

I searched for an errata list online but to no avail. I think a revised edition is badly in order.

It takes a lot of experience, time, and energy to know - and I mean really know - what Sinclair shares in this book

Over the course of my career I have come to own literally hundreds of books about derivatives pricing and trading. Few of these books manage to communicate the essence of what a professional derivatives trader needs to do to be successful. Volatility Trading is truly rare in that it presents a framework for analysis that is supported by a clear, well-defined trading philosophy: systematically find an edge and learn how to exploit it correctly. It takes a lot of experience, time, and energy to know - and I mean really know - what Sinclair shares in this book.

I found the chapter on volatility measurement and forecasting to be particularly useful. Few options traders take the time to understand the efficiency of their volatility estimators. Even fewer could clearly communicate that what we need is a view on the volatility distribution rather than a point forecast when we are trading volatility.

The author's mix of trading philosophy, quantitative intuition, and obvious trading experience is refreshing. The straight-forward no nonsense writing style also makes the book very readable. I would recommend this book to any quantitatively-minded trader. The chapter on money-management alone is easily worth the price of the book.

"Potpourri"

In "Volatility Trading" Euan Sinclair presents a compilation of the most notable features of many, many theorists. A lot of the theories have no practical value but they do make colourful commentary that leads to a meaningful conclusion. In addition he includes a potpourri of formulae including the Corrado and Su formula for including kurtosis and skewness in the normal Black Scholes Merton model call value. The Corrado Su skew curve, skew and kurtosis cones and volatility cones are included in files on the CD-Rom which accompanies the book.
Please note that Sinclair states that most of the information in " Options, Futures and other Derivatives" by John C Hull is prerequisite to reading his book. Sinclairs book is not suitable for beginners.

In the area of steelmaking, BOF plant practice including pre-treatment of hot metal, metallurgical features of oxygen steelmaking processes, and their control form part of the book. It also covers basic open hearth, electric arc furnace and stainless steelmaking, before discussing the area of casting of liquid steel ingot casting, continuous casting and near net shape casting. The book concludes with a chapter on the status of the ironmaking and steelmaking in India.

About the Author
AHINDRA GHOSH (Sc.D., MIT, USA), formerly Professor, Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, is well known for his expertise in Metallurgical and Materials Thermodynamics.

Besides 35 years of teaching and research experience at IIT Kanpur, Professor Ghosh has rich industrial experience, having worked with major companies like Tata Steel and Tata Consultancy Services. A Life Fellow of Indian Institute of Metals and Institution of Engineers (India), Life Member ISTE, and Fellow, Indian National Academy of Engineering, he has contributed extensively to national and international journals including Metallurgical and Materials Transactions (USA), ISIJ International (Japan), Steel Research (Germany), Ironmaking and Steelmaking (UK), and Trans. Indian Institute of Metals. He has also authored three books.

CHATTERJEE, AMITA metallurgical engineer from Banaras Hindu University, AMIT CHATTERJEE was awarded the Doctorate of Science (Engineering) Degree by the University of London in 1988 for his outstanding work on coal-based direct reduction and oxygen steelmaking. He had earlier obtained his PhD in process metallurgy from the prestigious Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, of which he is also a Fellow.

He started his professional career in the steel industry in Germany, followed by over 35 years of distinguished service in Tata Steel. At present, he is an Adviser in Tata Steel.

Dr. Chatterjee is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, England, The Indian Institute of Metals, India, as well as The Indian National Academy of Engineers, India. He has over 500 publications to his credit and is the recipient of several awards from India and overseas, including the National Metallurgist Award (1977), Visvesvaraya Gold Medal (1981 and 1996), SAIL Gold Medal (1982), Bhoruka Gold Medal (1992), Tata Gold Medal (1997), Platinum Medal (2002) and many others.

Dr. Chatterjee has authored several books: Ironmaking and Steelmaking Theory and Practice and Sponge Iron Production by Direct Reduction of Iron Oxide (both published by PHI Learning, New Delhi) as well as two other books entitled Beyond the Blast Furnace and Metallics for Steelmaking Production and Use besides a number of Monographs on Cokemaking, Sintermaking, Ironmaking, Continuous Casting, etc.

Almost Impossible for the beginner

I'm a student and beginner at discrete math and all related to this book. The book fails to teach in plain English and requiers you to come back to read over and over again what you failed to understand the first, second and third time.

The problems in each section are increadibily higher skilled than the examples and almost impossible to get the right answers. Some problems are even leagues away of what the examples imply and you would have never guessed where the answers on the back of the book came from.

Required but poorly written, poorly formatted, and an unfortunate choice for teaching discrete structures

At Portland State, this book is used for beginning DS but it's a very unfortunate book to use, especially since the professor teaching it uses the same examples and notes based on the book to teach the subject in class. I actually went online and found Vladlen Koltun's lecture notes from Stanford University. He goes over the same subject matter, actually explains a good proof structure and the more basic assumptions being made, and frankly made a lot more sense. Only buy it if it's required.

Not a great beginners book

This book can get you more lost than a first grader walking home from school. The exercise problems are terrible. It gives you the answers to all the easy problems and the hard problems which the chapters dont explain anything well will have you frustrated and confused. The chapters give you examples, but are not clear of how to work each example out. It just gives you the solution to the problem without giving an explanation. I have yet to find a solutions manual for this book. The book is not organized very well. If you have to have this book for a class, I suggest doing all the problems in each exercise, and the ones you cant figure out ask your teacher. I'm on my last two semesters in my CS degree and I have good programming skills, I would not recommend this book.
