The author responded to a fan over Twitter that the book will be released later this year :( It is very disappointing because I have been waiting for this book since May. I wish a statement was released before hand so we were not eagerly anticipating it.

Sheila Fitzpatrick is a distinguished service professor in modern Russian history at the University of Chicago and a visiting professor at the University of Sydney. About the Author

Massad Ayoob has authored thousands of articles and more than a dozen books on firearms and self-defense topics, including Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection; Combat Shooting with Massad Ayoob; Greatest Handguns of the World Volumes 1 and 2; and two editions of Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry. He founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group.

Quite Possibly the Definitive Text On the Subject

Well, Mas Ayoob has done it once again, a superbly researched and well written book on the use of deadly force in a self-defense situation. This book is loaded with lots of very sound and well research information and provides you with a library of recommended reading material that you should also study. Great Stuff!

The following is a list of the chapters in this book and a brief synopsis of what each chapter entails.

Chapter 1: Introduction

In this section the author gives you a standard introduction on what to expect in this book. A couple of things in particular stood out to me in this section, and the following section, and that was the recommendation of one book entitled, "A Time To Kill" by Greg Hopkins, and a set of four legal books entitled, "Warren On Homicide." I ordered the first book off of Amazon, and am actively searching for the four legal books, which at the time of this review I have not been able to find. But persistence and the internet will locate them for me in short order, I hope!

Chapter 2: Standards

In this section, the author talks about the "legal standards" by which YOU will be judged if you are ever involved in a situation where you employed deadly force. Each states or jurisdictions laws, although they me be similar, are going to be slightly different from one jurisdiction to another, it behooves you to know and follow the laws of the jurisdiction that you are in. Ignorance of the law is NOT a viable defense.

Chapter 3: The Ability Factor

In this section, the author discusses the "ability" of your attacker to inflict grievous bodily harm or death upon you. This usually takes the form of a weapon, which can be a variety of things, but also can include the sometimes little known and misunderstood fact of "disparity of force," which the author discusses as well.

Chapter 4: The Opportunity Factor

Opportunity in this section is discussed in relation to your attacker having the "opportunity" to harm you. Even though he/she may have the ability, they in fact may not have the opportunity to do so at the present time. There may be someone that has the ability to harm you, but if they are 100 miles away and don't have a missile, it would be pretty easy to conclude that they don't have the immediate opportunity to harm you.

Chapter 5: The Jeopardy Factor

In this section, the author clearly defines what jeopardy is and how to articulate that, if and when, you have to face a judge and jury of your "peers." A very eye-opening section and one that was really quite informative, just like the rest of the material in this book.

Chapter 6; Other Critical Concepts

The author discusses in this section some legal concepts which are not widely known by the general public, but are vitally important to your defense.

Chapter 7: Furtive Movement Shootings and Other Widely Misunderstood Events

This section deals with actual events that can and often do happen in a gunfight, yet are widely misunderstood by virtually everyone who is not an active student of the gun and gunfighting.

Chapter 8: Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground Laws

This section clearly defines the difference between the two and why they often times get confused with the other.

Chapter 9: Debunking Myths of Armed Self-Defense

I was actually surprised when I read this section, there were a couple of myths that I had never even heard of and was equally surprised that someone would actually try and use them as a viable defense. Every time, and I mean every time, I think I have heard the stupidest thing ever, I am blindsided with something even more profoundly stupid. This was the case as I read some of these myths.

Chapter 10: State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman: A Case Study for Armed Citizens

Exactly as the title of this section states, this covers this well publicized and very media and politically biased event. Great information!

Chapter 11: Case Study: State of Arizona vs. Larry Hickey

Another less known case of justifiable self-defense.

Chapter 12: After the Shooting

The author discusses what to say and what not to say after a self-defense shooting.

Chapter 13: Hardware Issues

The author discusses such issues as; choice of ammunition for self-defense, trigger pull, and even the names of guns. Which you may think isn't an issue, and you are right it shouldn't be an issue, but often times it is. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Chapter 14: Concealed Carry Advice

Included in this section is the authors "Ten Commandments for Concealed Carry."

I can not recommend this book, or any book by Mas Ayoob, highly enough. So as soon as you finish reading this review click on the buy it now button and purchase this book and read it several times. You will be glad that you did!

Excellent Must Read Book

Excellent Must Read Book.

I received this book as my annual educational item from the Armed Citizen's Legal Defense Network, which, by the way, has all of their monthly articles archived to read for free on their web site.

I have attended Ayoob's LFI-1 class and thought the material was so important that I repeated the class two years later as the MAG-40 class. Ayoob is one of, if not the best, expert on this subject. He is the gold standard.

While it is best to attend a class with Ayoob, this book is the next best thing. I am only part of the way through it, but the material and the presentation style seems very similar to being at the class.

When you consider the fact that if you are involved in an incident, you will most likely be charged and have to deal with the legal system even if you were completely justified, the cost of the class or these books is a drop in the bucket. The typical legal defense runs close to $50,000. That is not even considering the worst case scenario where out of ignorance you follow some screwed up advice you read or heard somewhere and act without justification and then do stupid things in the aftermath.

Owning a gun for self defense is a massive responsibility. Every gun owner owes it to themselves and society to become properly trained in the proper operation of their self defense tool and the when, when not and why of using their tool.

This book is a good first step.

Without the knowledge contained in this book you are not well armed ...

Being well trained in using your firearm, having good equipment, living with reasonable awareness, and having the proper mental attitude to survive a deadly attack are all good ... but unless you have an equally good working knowledge of the law surrounding a citizen's use of deadly force, you are not well armed.

When it comes to this topic, Ayoob is masterful in his knowledge, experience, and ability to communicate. Every citizen who keeps a firearm for self defense needs to read and absorb the material like a sponge. And when you purchase this book, also purchase attorney Andrew Branca's "The Law of Self Defense". Ayoob references Branca's work/book in his book, and like Ayoob, Branca is masterful in his deep legal knowledge and ability to deliver it to those of use with no legal training.

Step By Step Plan To Memory Improvement

I have read other of Harry Lorayne's books and they have all been valuable.
But this one is unique in that it gives a page by page plan to learn the techniques. You can go through it at your own pace and it's presented in an easy to understand way. You can spend as much time as necessary with each page. You can finish reading it understanding the mechanics of memory a lot better, and even a surface practicing of the techniques will help a lot.
Of course, systematic practice will work even better.
Some of Lorayne's other books present more detailed information, but this one is a good, solid presentation of memory improvement and is maybe one of the easiest ones to begin to put into practice for immediate improvement.
It is especially good for people who have had no prior exposure to memory improvement and would like to have some practical advice that they can implement right away.
Try it! You won't be disappointed.

In this rousing narrative, Berkeley professor Hartman traces first-hand the progress of her ancestors-forced migrants from the Gold Coast-in order to illuminate the history of the Atlantic slave trade. Chronicling her time in Ghana following the overland slave route from the hinterland to the Atlantic, Hartman admits early on to a naïve search for her identity: "Secretly I wanted to belong somewhere or, at least, I wanted a convenient explanation of why I felt like a stranger." Fortunately, Hartman eschews the simplification of such a quest, finding that Africa's American expatriates often find themselves more lost than when they started. Instead, Hartman channels her longing into facing tough questions, nagging self-doubt and the horrors of the Middle Passage in a fascinating, beautifully told history of those millions whose own histories were revoked in "the process by which lives were destroyed and slaves born." Shifting between past and present, Hartman also considers the "afterlife of slavery," revealing Africa-and, through her transitive experience, America-as yet unhealed by de-colonization and abolition, but showing signs of hope. Hartman's mix of history and memoir has the feel of a good novel, told with charm and passion, and should reach out to anyone contemplating the meaning of identity, belonging and homeland.

Hartman journeys along the route taken by captured slaves from the interior of what is now Ghana to the Atlantic coast. With no specific trail to follow from her own lineage, Hartman views her search as a coming to terms with her status as stranger and wanderer in the African diaspora. She meets African American expatriates who have been living in Ghana for 20 years, not fully integrated in Africa but alienated from America. She also meets Ghanians who deride or exploit the desperate longing they see in the throngs of black Americans who visit the slave castles each year. She explores the perspective on slaves and slavery held by Africans versus the African American view and how those perspectives affect diasporan efforts to reconnect and to reckon with history. Reflecting on the complex history of slavery, Hartman integrates memories of her own family's journey to become African Americans from the Middle Passage through the Caribbean to the U.S. An eloquent and thoughtful look at the Atlantic slave trade and its resounding impact on the African American psyche. What "Roots" was to the Boomer Generation, "Lose Your Mother" could and should be to the Generation Next. Saidiay Hartman's writing styles fits perfectly for a generation that longs for and loves narrative, story, and first-hand journal accounts.

However, no one should thus assume that Hartman's writing lacks research credibility for she brilliantly weaves both rousing narrative and copious research to portray a powerful picture of one of history's ugliest stories: Middle Passage. She provides a fresh account of ancient wounds.

Hartman's book can and should make a renewed contribution to the healing of past hurts which still linger deep. Her passionate style and scholarly depth can help a nation move beyond suffering to healing hope.

I got this AD&D Expert Set right after it came out in 1981. For those of you who have used the AD&D Basic Set, the Expert Set takes things to a whole new level (no pun intended). Included in this Expert Set is the module The Isle Of Dread, a wilderness adventure.

For anybody who has played and likes classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, both the Basic Set and Expert Set will give you hours of entertainment (and maybe a headache or two due to the complex rules that are a hallmark of D&D).

fantastic book, but read my review first...

I just purchased this book last week and it is a great text book. Dr Martini is one of the best in the field of Anatomy and Physiology, so this text book you will want to keep for future references.

With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the 8th edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $35 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0321505719). Both the 8th and 9th edition even have the same amount of pages, 1264 pages to be exact... something is fishy... New pictures, replacement of cover?

I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.

*Update*: The previous edition (8th) is now selling for less than $5 bucks. You are better off with that one, plus you will want to keep it for your second A&P class, or at least as a reference to look back at later on. For most A&P students, you will cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II you will probably start with the Endocrine System or chapter 15.

Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so your be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, your still be able to use your Mastering A & P information if you take AP2 in the fall, saving you a lot!

Finding this textbook for under $100 is difficult. If you only need the book then this is a great deal. If you need the complete package which includes the atlas, cd, and access code then this isn't it. The package is under ISBN: 0321719794.
