Easy to read, but no page #s on Kindle version

I bought the Kindle version, which doesn't have actual page numbers. That is very inconvenient for me since I need page numbers when using the text as a reference. :( Other than that, I like the book a lot. It's easy to read, keeps my interest nicely, and doesn't ramble on & on about one subject like many textbooks tend to do. There are a lot of references to Florence Nightingale, including her history and contributions to holistic nursing, which I find refreshing; it's a nice way to tie in alternative therapies to traditional therapies.

Not about imaging at all.

Despite the introduction saying that "it is designed specifically for those involved in image processing system", I failed to see how the book is supposed to achieve that. Most examples are not even about image processing. It is really a general, little-bit of everything software engineering book, including some distasteful engineer propaganda.
So if you are looking about a book to help you design imaging systems, this book barely talk about it at all. If you are looking for a software engineering book, there are better ones out there.

About the Author
Kelly Cowan just celebrated her 20th anniversary at Miami University Middletown, an open admissions campus in Ohio. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Louisville, and later worked at the University of Maryland and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She specializes in teaching microbiology to nonmajors, and especially to pre-nursing and allied health students. She herself fell in love with microbiology while pursuing an undergraduate degree in dental hygiene. She has made it her personal mission to hear nurses and dental hygienists she encounters in everyday situations exclaim, "I loved my microbiology class!"

Watered-Down Textbook

This edition (3rd) is exactly like the 4th, so save yourself some money and buy this one. I bought this used for exactly $20 (it was in really good condition, just a little bit of highlighting) and the seller was clear that it didn't include the access code. I didn't need one for my class anyway. If you do, I'd still suggest to buy this book (the 3rd edition) used from a seller on Amazon, and buy the access card from the publisher separately. You'll still spend less overall compared to buying a bundle of the newest edition and the access card. So, 5 stars for cheap price and good seller.

As far as the textbook goes, this is where the 2 stars are deducted. As a biochemistry major, I've taken quite a few complicated biology classes. Microbiology isn't required for my degree, but I decided to take it because it was required for an RN program I was considering entering (so I took it at the college which had the program, not the university I'm getting my degree at; tuition was cheaper). Compared to other textbooks for upper level biology classes (for example, Essential Cell Biology by Alberts, which I used for my Cell Biology class), this textbook seemed very watered down and empty. There were very few useful diagrams compared to other biology textbooks (so stay away if you're a visual learner), the pictures seemed like they were taken in the '90s, and the language and content felt very much like it was intended for use by a high schooler. This watered down-ness could be a good thing, however, for those new to biology. At the university that I am getting my degree, Microbiology can't be taken until you've completed Biology for Majors 1 and 2, Cell Biology, Chemistry 1 and 2, and Statistics; I couldn't imagine them using a textbook like this for that class. However, the college which I took this course at only requires General Biology 1 before Microbiology, so it makes sense that they would use this textbook.

My university won't even transfer the credits for this class because the syllabus and textbook showed it is not up to par with a real university-level Microbiology lecture. This is a good introduction to microbiology (and biology/basic chemistry in general), but true microbiology has so much more chemistry and complex concepts than this textbook lets on. So, if you're using this for self-study, you're taking this class at a local college and plan on transferring to a 4-year university for any kind of science degree, and/or you plan on working in the microbiology field or in a biology lab (medical or otherwise) at some point in the future, don't use this textbook. I'd recommend instead Brock Biology of Microorganisms (14th edition) by Madigan. It's the textbook my university uses and it is much more detailed, better written, and the diagrams and pictures are great for visual learners.

Headings like "How Small is SMALL

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK if you are older than 18. It is written in a very childish and unsophisticated manner. Headings like "How Small is SMALL?" make you want to throw the book across the room. There are several grammatical and spelling errors, and the pictures from 1982 could use some serious updates. This is BY FAR, the worst textbook I have ever had to study in my 30+ years on this planet.
If you have to buy this book for class, you have to buy it for class. But if you are looking at self study, trust me and save yourself a headache. Find something that doesn't make you feel dumber when reading it.

About the Author
Juanes is a Colombian musician who has sold more than fifteen million albums worldwide. He has won multiple Latin Grammy Awards and one Grammy Award. Juanes received the BMI President’s Award at the 2010 BMI Latin Awards. He is also known for his humanitarian work, especially with aid for Colombian victims of antipersonnel mines.

Today, as I write these words, we are just starting rehearsals for our next tour, and the best is yet to come. Rehearsals, as always, involve the beautiful adventure of going back to the beginning. The newest chapters in this book have yet to be written; the various untraveled labyrinths of the mind have yet to be discovered. Meanwhile, as the world continues on and as new experiences arise, there will be more material for this book.

But for now, I just want to outline a few memories from my life, and share them as if I were sitting in my living room among friends.

This is an expression of pure friendship and a sincere way of saying thanks to everyone who has supported my music over the years. I’m sure those are the people who have read up to this point. Others might only read certain sections in order to comment or criticize.

It’s honestly nothing personal—it’s just a fact of life. It’s not my job to write books. Not in the least. Since this idea was first proposed to me, I went through a number of stages. I felt that if I really did this, it would be for you to learn who I truly am, who it is behind the songs you hear at the concerts. Why I make the music I make, and why I think the way I think.

I feel it’s a risk for someone to expose his soul. In other words, after reading this—or at least after seeing it published—some people might not understand what I’m trying to say. Others will read it and connect even more deeply. Let’s just say it’s a risk I’m willing to take, and I’ll do it with love.

True to himself

Publishing memoirs already at the age of 40? Sounds weird? Not if you are Juanes, a multifaceted artist, philanthropist, peace activist, husband and father of three who has made his mark during the last decade. His numerous triumphs, awards and accolades would easily be enough for a couple of lives. "I know I can't change the world but I can change the world in me" - the phrase from one of his songs - signifies Juanes' relentless dedication to personal progress. But by chasing the sun" for himself he has inevitably also influenced the world and the lives of many people on this planet. Despite his huge stardom Juanes has remained true to himself - humble, sensitive and at the same time highly visionary and absolutely fearless. His message is of peace and hope. So much has been written about him that the artist's desire to finally tell his truth can be felt like a liberation and the starting point for a lot more to come. Still, Juanes will continue to listen to his heart. As a contemporary document "Chasing the sun" illustrates that global stardom can take its begin in Colombia - or anywhere in the world. But not without a "one in a million"-talent, an unbreakable will and the support from a loving family - to whom Juanes justly dedicates his book.

Absolutely Delightful!

I was fortunate to receive Juanes's new book on Kindle the first evening it was out,I sat up all night and read it in one sitting. I could not put it down. I must admit, I am a big Juanes fan and have been for years but I have to admit this book stood on its own merit. It was not only delightful, it was heartwarming, funny, charming, honest, painfully for him in places and truly from the heart.
I learned so many things about Juanes and his family. He is a remarkable human being in so many ways. Treat yourself to a good read. It is worth every penny.

This is a good book. It explains what happens when a certain pathway is malfunctioning. However, I wish that it was a little more clear in explaining certain pathways. (It assumes you really know biochemistry).

Great book for biochem not so much for the boards

For those who like pictures along with their text, this book is great. Even though biochemistry is a detailed subject this book is not too weighed down in details and will allow you to understand the material fairly well. However, I stared to turn to it more as a reference than a main source. This may be because I thought that it was not calibrated appropriately for the usmle. It seems to be written more for a biochemistry class. It lacks in clinical correlations, the ability to be quickly reviewed, and there are precious few questions to get down the material at the end of each chapter. One feature that was nice, however, was a summary section at the end of each chapter. It is definitely not a comprehensive summary, but it does allow a quick summary of good things to know. All in all, a good book to have with you, but not the best source for the boards.

A fantastic book: Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews - Biochemistry

I found this book to be fantastically illustrated and just the right amount of thoroughness for a review book. I seldom used it during the Biochemistry class as it didn't go into the level of detail expected for school exams. However it was quite useful for a quick resource if I was struggling with a concept. The book was a fantastic tool in the couple of days I had to prepare for the NBME after the end of the class. I read it from cover to cover in 2 days, stopping along the way to check my notes on a few concepts that were superficially covered. I was more than pleased with my score after using this as my main source to prepare (aside from studying hard during the course, obviously).

The illustrations & flow charts are the best part of the book, they are simple and easy to read. Key words are often bolded to make skimming easy. Another thing I enjoyed with this text was that most pages have very large empty margins so there is plenty of room for writing your own notes next to diagrams/paragraphs.
