Roberto Ulloa

Roberto Ulloa has a diverse academic record in multiple disciplines within the field of computer science. Currently, he is working with artificial societies as part of his PhD thesis at the University of Western Ontario. He obtained an MSc degree from the University of Costa Rica and taught programming and computer networking there. He has earned a living as a web developer, working with Python/Django and PHP/Wordpress. He collaborates with various researchers while also working on his own projects, including his blog (http://robertour.com). He constantly worries that the Internet has already become aware of itself and that we are not able to communicate with it because of the improbability of it being able to speak any of the 6,000-plus odd human languages that exist on the planet.

Good for intermediate to advanced Python programmers looking to get started with Kivy

This second edition of "Kivy - Interactive Applications and Games in Python" is much improved from the first edition. The atrocious grammar throughout the first edition book has mostly been fixed, although it's still worse than what I expect from a professionally edited book. The new chapters showcase current Kivy features while reiterating how to build a basic Kivy app, and the book covers an impressive amount material in its nearly 185 pages. I think this is due largely to the efficiency and power of coding in Python and Kivy, but also to the carefully-chosen projects the author selected for his readers to create. Despite several indentation issues in the example code and the many grammar issues typical of Packt's books, I can now recommend this book for intermediate to experienced Python programmers who are looking to get started with Kivy.

Chapter one is a good, quick introduction to a minimal Kivy app, layouts, widgets, and their properties.

Chapter two is an excellent introduction and exploration of basic canvas features and usage. This is often a difficult concept for beginners to understand, and this chapter handles it well.

Chapter three covers events and binding of events, but is much denser and difficult to grok than chapter two. It will likely require multiple reads of the chapter to get a good understanding of the topic, but if you're persistent, everything you need is there.

Chapter four contains a hodge-podge of Kivy user interface features. Screens and scatters are covered well, but gestures still feel like magic. I have yet to find a good in-depth explanation of gestures in Kivy, so this does not come as a surprise. Behaviors is a new feature in Kivy and a new section in this second edition of the book. Changing default styles is also covered in this chapter. The author does not talk about providing a custom atlas for styling, but presents an alternative method for theming involving Factories.

In chapter six the author does a good job of covering animations, and introduces sounds, the clock, and atlases. He brings these pieces together to build a version of Space Invaders, in about 500 lines of Python and KV. It ends up a bit code-dense, but the result is a fun game and a concise code base to play around with.

In chapter seven the author builds a TED video player including subtitles and an Android actionbar. There is perhaps too much attention paid to the VideoPlayer widget, but the resulting application is a useful base for creating other video applications.

Very good introduction. There is tons of example code to refer back to. Tying each chapter to a complete Kivy project also helps build knowledge on how to put Kivy into action. I will definitely use this as a reference to keep fresh on Kivy concepts.

I liked it. It was a honest account of Modesty's life without any excuses or being "forced" into BDSM life style. I also liked that the author gave us what was in Michael's mind. I just think that he should have included more of Michael's POV, especially towards the of the book.

This book is packaged as a series of 44 tips for better TCP/IP programs, but it actually does much more. Early sections review the basics of the TCP, UDP and IP protocols, along with related standards. A winning feature here is the author's care to distinguish between the well-known BSD (for Unix) and Winsock (for Windows) versions of sockets. (By using macros and "skeleton" programs, his sample C code will run easily on either implementation.)

Besides offering nuts-and-bolts programming advice and plenty of hints for better performance, Snader also discusses how IP works under the hood. Standout sections here include a discussion of the pitfalls of scaling a stand-alone or LAN TCP/IP application to the Internet, as well as what a "reliable" protocol like TCP really means. Lots of hints and well described cases. This book manages to clarify all the problems any man-page networking programmer gets confused by. The term 'naive implementation' is something I recognize and anyone struggling with network code probably does as well. I think this book makes a lot of difference....

entry-level textbook disguised as "tips"

I don't know why this book is rated so highly. There's nothing wrong with the content (what little there is), but I feel that it's misrepresented as a book for intermediate level network programmers. I was expecting discussion on when to use select() vs. multi-threaded vs. single-threaded servers, for example. But this book is more for beginners (Tip #1, "Understand the difference between connectionless and connection-oriented protocols").

I also feel that the title is misleading. I was expecting a book of specific tips on par with Scott Meyers' Effective C++/STL series which are vastly superior references on their own topics).

It's decent as a textbook, once you realize that's what this is. But it's still pretty shallow, and definitely not worth the high price tag.

Alyssia needed money to expand and keep her animal shelter running. Tate her brothers best friend and her crush since she was young created a program to raise the money. Tate was attracted to Lys but knew not to go there, her brother will probably kill him. besides being known as a player, he never had any intentions of settling down. When an abused dog comes into the shelter, Lys refuses to return him to his owners and this sets into motion some bad publicity for her shelter. When she Lys and Tate agree to one night together, they both find themselves wanting more. Now he is going against the mixing business with pleasure.

Loved the attraction between Lys and Tate. It jumped off the pages. With her over protective big brother Jared , Tate knows this can never go anywhere. Being raised in such a dysfunctional family, Tate never believed in one women for a man. No matter how he feels about Lys. Plenty of suspense and some hot sex scenes the book keeps you turning pages. Allyson never fails to come through with her sexy nerds. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was gifted an ARC by the Author for an honest review. This was a six star read for me, Tate and Lys have amazing chemistry! Tate works with Lys's brother-who's overprotective of his little sister- and they are all friends since childhood. Tate has a reputation as a ladies man, specializing in one night stands and no attachments. Lys is so likable as a character, you will find yourself cheering for these two. Perfect, perfect, perfect!!!

Alyssia is a veterinarian. Tate is her brother's best friend and a part of her life since she was young. He sets up a program to help her raise money to expand her animal clinic. When a dog is brought in abused, she refuses to give it back to the owners. Which happens to be rich and sleeping with Tate's mother. Who is a world class witch! They start a campaign to have her shut down and take her to court. Tate has always been the one night stand type but one night just won't due with Alyssia. But she wants marriage and kids and he doesn't think he's good enough for her. With his family being so dysfunctional and not believing in happily ever after.
Smoking hot sex scenes. Horrible parents, who I wanted to slap. A protective big brother. And a sexy geek and beautiful doctor.

Holy Cliffhanger!

I'm a little bummed...I loved the dynamic of Bryce, Corrigan and Sheldon in Jaded, and I didn't love where this book took their relationships. The writing is fantastic, but my issue is more with the storyline. Nothing is resolved in this book, and you are left with a major cliffhanger and a crazy turn of events to start the 3rd book. It certainly is a roller coaster, and Tijan's style is great as always. Maybe I'm just going to switch to Team Denton! ;-)

And she does it again!!! Every time I read another Tijan book, I am continually amazed and impressed! This book was no exception! Awesome continuation of Jaded!

CONTAINS SPOILERS

Throughout the beginning of the book I was rooting for Bryce but after the 'other' girl, I wasn't a Bryce fan so much. I know I know......Sheldon was a b**** and developed feelings for Corrigan (or always had them) and slept with Denton in the first book but to me, Bryce messed up! Sleeping with another girl and then using her as an excuse for some head trip experiment with Sheldon was screwed up.

I wavered back in forth between wanting her to be with Corrigan after all Bryce's crap or just saving F-you to the both of them and turning the tables around on them by choosing neither and going with Denton. I know I definitely don't want to see her wuss out and pick Bryce so I'm hoping for the middle finger send off to both or picking Corrigan. I can't wait to find this out in the next book.

Now, the cliffhanging..........WOW!!!! I don't want to give to much away here, so I'll just say that it saddens me but leads up to a great third book.

Love the book! Can't wait for more to come so please don't make us wait too long, Tijan!!!!

Oh and love the new Caroline character!

Highly highly recommended!!!! Don't forget to read the first book!

It's Official!!!!

I might have to stop reading Tijan's books. Not because I hate them but the simple fact that I love them. I am in my 30's and I get sucked into this high school/freshmen college, drama and love it! There isn't even any descriptive sexual scenes, they are brief and tasteful but I am always craving more. However there's mystery, drama, parties, and craziness. The only reason why I have to keep from giving it a perfect 5 star is I do get lost sometimes with the writing and have to re read a bit. The banter between characters and the fast pace of the book will do that to you. But, never a dull moment.
