Cool behind the scenes info and truth about Kate, horrible, horrible format and writing
By rockhound
I hate having to give this book three stars! I truly do. I think it should be mandatory reading for anyone who has ever watched reality television and Kate +8 in particular. There are numerous examples of Kate's manipulations, abuses, poor behavior, narcissism and lies. The beauty of it is- all of those negative aspects are in her own words and with plenty of context. This isn't a case of tabloid dramatics and fabricated stories. Kate acknowledged that everything in this book was HER WRITING and HER STORY and ,therefore, her "property" (which she attempted to copyright!). It's undeniably factual because Kate did the most foolish thing imaginable- in her pursuit to bury truth and censure Hoffman, she inadvertently confirmed that this was legit.

I was disturbed by so many things in this book. Those kids are pawns and a paycheck to Kate.

Now to my critique... this book is very, very poorly formatted, edited, and repetitive. It's bordering on unreadable at a technical level. Some of this might be chalked up to the text being poorly adapted for reading on a Kindle or e-reader. However, in this day and age, such poor formatting is inexcusable and diminishes from the message. There are literally over 50 places where paragraphs are repeated and e-mails are repeated in their entirety. There are some things that could've been done to make this book readable, including: formatting (example: it's clear that Hoffman copy/pasted Kate's email chains because they're backwards in chronology -with the initial email after a response), condensing chapters into relevant topics and subject matter (as opposed to wandering off onto unrelated tangents), clear separation of his narrative and the evidence, and (finally) a true chronology. In one chapter, you might swing from 2007 to 2011 with no purpose. It results in a hodgepodge of information. My final critique regards the inclusion of Hoffman's verbatim notes for his job into the text. I would've included these notes in an appendix and used them to frame the author's narrative account of the situation. Because, honestly, he includes a lot of speculation that detracts from the point in these filing reports. If you're an author, you use notes to build the story... the story isn't your notes.

I bought the first book and was sad to see that this updated version really didn't have new information. The author claims that there are a hundred new pages but those pages seem to consist of repetitive information. I really hope Hoffman finds a good editor and finds someone willing to help him format this into e-reader friendly text.

Get past the format, the information is revealing
By ebonysmom
I believe every one of this author's claims as authentic and truthful. There is no need to embellish or tweak what he discovered in Kate's garbage because he has the proof in his possession. How I would love to see the boxes and tables full of this evidence in real life. If this was evidence for a trial, the prosecution would have a pure win.

The format is very annoying, but I never thought I was buying a novel. I was looking for a real journey into the world and mind of Kate Gosselin, which is presented here largely in her own words from her (discarded) diary.

Robert Hoffman gets high marks from me.

Galileo, by John L. Heilbron

In 1610, Galileo published the Siderius nuncius, or Starry Messenger, a "hurried little masterpiece" in John Heilbron's words. Presenting to the world his remarkable observations using the recently invented telescope--the craters of the moon, the satellites of Jupiter--Galileo dramatically challenged our idea of the perfection of the heavens and the centrality of the Earth in the universe. Indeed, the appearance of the little book is regarded as one of the great moments in the history of science.

Here is a major new biography of Galileo, a fresh and much more rounded view of the great scientist than found in previous works. Unlike previous biographers, Heilbron shows us that Galileo was far more than a mathematician: he was deeply knowledgeable in the arts, an expert on the epic poet Ariosto, a fine lutenist. More important, Heilbron notes that years of reading the poets and experimenting with literary forms were not mere sidebars--they enabled Galileo to write clearly and plausibly about the most implausible things. Indeed, Galileo changed the world not simply because he revolutionized astronomy, but because he conveyed his discoveries so clearly and crisply that they could not be avoided or denied. If ever a discoverer was perfectly prepared to make and exploit his discovery, it was the dexterous humanist Galileo aiming his first telescope at the sky.

In Galileo, John Heilbron captures not only the great scientist, but also the creative, artistic younger man who would ultimately become the champion of Copernicus, the bĂȘte-noire of the Jesuits, and the best-known of all martyrs to academic freedom.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* “Have faith, Galileo, and go forth.” So Kepler urged on his gifted Italian contemporary. But in this insightful biography, Heilbron shows readers that as Galileo heeded Kepler’s urging, he went forth with faith not only in an ingeniously devised telescope but also in poetically inspired words. Readers see the often-forgotten literary side of the great astronomer, the side aflame with a passion for Dante and Ariosto just as ardent as his better-known enthusiasm for Euclid and Archimedes. Heilbron indeed reveals how Galileo’s sometimes-combative advocacy of great literary art prepared him for the rhetorical task of winning converts to Copernican cosmology. For in defending the creative geometry of Dante’s hell against hostile critics, Galileo honed his gift for well-crafted polemics, so priming himself for the task of championing a revolutionary scientific paradigm. For only by developing an imagination as capacious as Dante’s was Galileo able to wrap his mind around a previously undreamed-of universe, governed by radically new heliocentric principles. Of course, many seventeenth-century clerics lacked Galileo’s intellectual daring, and Heilbron teases out the various subplots swirling around the famous confrontation between Galileo and his ecclesiastical antagonists. A complete portrait illuminating how a bold pioneer forged surprising links between science and the humanities. --Bryce Christensen

This will become the DEFINITIVE Biography of one of history's most impactful scientists - 4 Stars
By Richard of Connecticut
Let me sum it up in the beginning of this review for you. This book has 366 pages of narrative in 8 chapters. With footnotes, you are looking at 508 pages. The narrative is thorough, from the great scientist's birth in 1564 to his death in 1642. It is thoroughly researched and there is no question that John Heilbron did his homework objectively. He applied a scholar's eye to an enormous body of work that was created by Galileo.

It is my opinion that if John Heilbron's Galileo suffers from one problem, it is the author's passion for scholarship versus making the subject of his book come alive. In essence, I found I suffered from a certain amount of boredom, and even found some of the reading tedious. This does not detract from the importance of this work, or the fact that nobody else has tackled Galileo in quite a few years.

For most of us growing up, Galileo Galilei was along with Da Vinci, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, one of the four most significant scientists to the general public in the last ten centuries. We know Galileo as a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and physicist. Perhaps more significantly, he was the man who invented the telescope, and thus along with Christopher Columbus is unique among Italians. Columbus discovered a new world here on earth, and Galileo discoverd new worlds in the heavens.

His importance cannot be overestimated. Look at just a few of the subjects he studied and expanded upon:

* If you want to understand the motion of uniformly accelerated objects, you must look at his work. It is even studied in school today.

* He is probably the dividing line between the old ways of looking at science and what today would be termed modern science.

* Since he is deemed to be the inventor of the telescope, he is probably the most important innovator in the field of observational astronomy. This includes the discovery of four of Jupiter's moons, the largest, plus the confirmation of the phases of Venus, and sunspot observations. Don't forget he also observed the Milky Way galaxy, another first.

* This is the man who took Copernican's view of the sun as the center of our solar system, and ran with it. He ran so hard that it brought him to his knees in front of the Inquisition and it is all covered in this book in exquisite detail. You will finally understand how strongly the Church fought to hold onto its views as the earth as the center of the universe. Not only clerics fought Galileo, but philosophers also.

He was denounced in 1615, and was cleared a year later. The Church warned him to get behind the old theory. Author Heilbron writes in detail how the master scientist went on to preach his views again in "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" published in 1632. This time the Inquisition did find him suspect of heresy. After withdrawing his previously held opinions, Galileo was placed under house arrest the rest of his life.

The man we know as Galileo certainly knew how to annoy people. He had been doing it since he was a young man, and as you also know when you do embarrass people with your superior intellect, they are not likely to forget it. These individuals who held pent-up resentments against the scientist got their revenge later on when the renowned thinker was having his difficulties with the Church and others.

In every book I seek to find the one page, paragraph or sentence that makes the book worthwhile for me to read. I found it on page 65 of this book. Cesare Cremonini was a Junior Professor of Philosophy at the University of Padua from 1591 to 1631. In the book Heilbron quotes Cremonini as saying, "Each of us is a microcosm of the universe: hence introspection can deliver knowledge of the world as well as of the self; he who knows himself is a natural philosopher." How profound a statement is this?

My favorite chapters were Chapter 4 on Galilean Science. The sub chapter on the Reluctant Astronomer is very interesting. Chapter 7 Vainglory which is about his problems with the Pope was fascinating.

SUMMARY:

Galileo was a Renaissance man as that term is used today. He was a musician, and a superb artist. He understood foreshadowing, and perspective. He was certainly a draughtsman. He certainly could have been a painter had he chosen to pursue it. He could be a great writer at times and was a world class philosopher. He loved technology, consider his invention of the telescope, and without question, he was into gadgets. He even made a living wholesaling out the telescopes he would create. He sold them to shopkeepers to be sold to others including ship captains. His powers of memory were prodigious. He could recite vast stretches of different writers. These included Dante and Petrarch.

If you want to understand the achievements of one of the great scientists of the millennium, you will not find a better scholarly understanding of Galileo's world than John Heilbron's work. Once again, you will probably have to maintain your own interest level, as opposed to having an author whisk you away on a journey through a book that you can't put down. Thank you for reading this review.

Scholarly, Definitive, Tedious
By Amazon Customer
If you want a comprehensive discussion of Galileo's scientific work, and a thorough discussion of its place in Italian culture of the time, this book is THE book. As a scholarly achievement, it is awe inspiring. The discussion, and occasional fictionalized representations of 17th scientific thinking are wonderful and detailed. I fault the book for style as a biography, not as a work of scholarship. The author takes a tone of arch, ironic detachment towards his subject that is novel and entertaining at first, but which grows immensely tedious after one or two hundred pages. Finally, it becomes, in spite of the fascination of the subject, simply boring.

A great book
By Charles S. Fisher
Thank you John for a truly delightful and deeply informative book about Galileo, his science, personality and struggles with the Church. John and I crossed virtual paths around 1965 when I met Thomas Kuhn at Berkeley on his way to Princeton. John must have been his graduate student then. Kuhn invited me to Princeton where from being a mathematician I practiced history and sociology of science for a while. I ended up teaching at Brandeis for 30 years beginning with trying to illuminate students about the Copernican Revolution and convey some idea of how science works. I have traveled a long way since those days. So coming across John's book was like a breath of fresh air showing how beautifully history of science can be written. First I find his ironic way of jousting with history most entertaining. Little back-handed comments about Galileo's self serving personality left me chuckling. Only someone with a mastery of history can get away with such literary elegance and John certainly is a master. An example of this art are the closing lines of the book referring to the Church's overdoing its resurrection of Galileo parallel to its undoing of him four hundred years before: "According to Galileo's mechanics, the slightest force can move the greatest weight given sufficient time.....Who can doubt that within another 400 years, the church will recognize Galileo's divine gifts, ignore his arrogance, and make him a saint?" And the imaginative dialogue, in the spirit of Galileo, which John creates because of lack of evidence, to explicate what John feels must have been Galileo's basic reasoning about motion.

It was Galileo's arrogance that got him into trouble. Had he not been so sure of his physical and theological ideas, despite the fact he was often wrong, would not admit the priority of others, and stubbornly held on in spite of countervailing evidence, he might have not gotten into trouble. He seemed more interested in shoving his viewpoints down the throats of the Church or the Jesuit and Dominican orders when he could have continued to practice his "science," without asserting it as truth. The Inquisition gave him an out when he was first censured. Not only did he refuse to take it but rubbed salt in the wounds so his eventual recanting and incarceration seemed more personal on the part of a pope who reacted as much as a spurned lover as the enforcer of the faith. And it is in this whole complex that we get a sense that Galileo's "science" was different from what we now associate as science. We cast Bacon and Newton as rationalists where science is defined as being value free hypotheses along with experimental testing which reads only the realities of nature. We forget that Newton spent more time at alchemy then he did inventing the force of gravity. Here is a place that John's book excels. He shows how Galileo and his peers wrestled with their understanding of physical reality as embedded in personal experience, assumptions about existence, "experiments" and beliefs. They selectively threw out Aristotle's reliance on how we experience the world as working---e.g. if resistance to wind slows our pace, then with a vacuum there would be infinite speed--- and replaced with it with reasoning which took them into all kinds of speculative side traps yet within which we see elements of Newton's hypotheses of empty space and laws of gravity and motion. It is easier to see science as embedded in the changing world views of Galileo times than it is today where physics and cosmology have worked their way into such positions of authority that they can command billions of dollars for very questionable endeavors or get supported for spinning out what looks almost like mathematical theology in string theory.

But back to Galileo. As telescope and then microscope maker, his contributions to changing our world are clear. His Medician planets and mountains of the moon and parallax are really world shaking. His arguments about incline planes and gunnery though mixed with faulty reasoning nonetheless made possible the Newtonian revolution. He never quite worked out longitude and his arguments about tides not only disagreed with observation but smacked of Aristotle's reasoning. In the Robert Maynard Hutchins's great books era at the University of Chicago I attended was a three year series of required natural science courses where students read Aristotle, Galileo etc. And though I examed out of those courses, my friends would describe to me how with each book, such as Galileo's "Discourses" they became convinced of its arguments only to be knocked off balance by the next, such as Newton or Descartes. John adds a needed historical context to flesh out those transitions. His portrayal of the characters of Galileo's friends and opponents such as Scarpi, Pope Urban, Galileo's mother, son and daughter are not dull history but live people some of whom were as stubborn and self serving as Galileo both in their science, if they were academicians, and in their personal lives, seeking profit, financial security or fame.

I must confess that my own mathematical training has lapsed over my years of teaching other things, working as a mechanic, electrician, etc and becoming more interested in natural and environmental history, that I had some difficulty following the explications of Galileo's reasoning. John did make it easier by translating a lot but I don't think I have the patience to work through the details any more. I would constantly refer back to my dim memories of undergraduate physics. And though I can generally follow descriptions of relativity and quantum, I find I no longer understand kinematics and dynamics so got confused with what I know to be true physics with Galileo's often erroneous reasoning or obscure arguments. I found it quite interesting that Galileo preferred reasoning from geometry rather than abstract algebra. I am the reverse.

In closing I want to say that I think this is a truly great book in the history of science. When I put the book down, I felt I had met a historian who covered all the bases and also presented the history in a way that was enlivening. I look forward to reading John's books on Planck and Rutherford though they are probably more challenging.

From Publishers Weekly
Here are 15 less-than-clever rhyming parodies of classic children's stories and poems, including The Tortoise and the Hare , The Emp e r o r's New Clothes , Dick Whittington's Cat , Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves , Hansel and Gretel , etc. Most of Dahl's attempts at playful lasciviousness seem juvenile: "As I was going to St. Ives / I met a man with seven wives / Said he, 'I think it's much more fun / Than getting stuck with only one.' " Several jokes fall flat on their British colloquialism: "Hey diddle diddle / We're all on the fiddle," while others die of old age: "knickers" rhymed with "vicar's." Blake, who also illustrated Dahl's Matilda , supplies messily frenzied line drawings that are far more amusing than the sophomoric verses they accompany.
Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Blake's jacket art for this book says it all: on a garbage can (or is it a stew pot?) from which waft images from the satirized stories within is a sign which reads "Warning--Unsuitable for Small Readers." Never known for subtlety, good taste, or benevolence, Dahl is his usual disrespectful, misanthropic self in Rhyme Stew . In jaunty, often funny verse, he pokes fun at a dozen or so traditional rhymes and folktales. In "Dick Whittington and His Cat," the cat convinces Dick to leave London: " 'Come home, my boy, without more fuss/ This lousy town's no place for us.' " In "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," the action unfolds in London's Ritz Hotel to a scene of debauchery that makes the Arabian Nights seem almost chaste. Pen-and-ink drawings have the same ease to them as the verses--as if they were simply dashed off. A djinn in underpants and a naked king being fitted for invisible clothes are both particularly funny. However, it is not the raunchy longer pieces that make this a book not for children, but the shorter verses like "A Hand in the Bird" involving a vicar's hands in a maiden's knickers and "Hot and Cold" which begins: "A woman who my mother knows/ Came in and took off all her clothes." Adolescents who enjoy pretty tasteless and aggressive humor will doubtless be amused by Dahl's cleverness. --Ann Stell, The Smithtown Library, NY
Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The usual Dahl ingredients, irreverent wit and comic invention liberally spiced with the mildly suggestive or outre , suit this stew to the popular (if unrefined) taste of adolescents of every age. The longer verses are fractured take-offs of traditional tales: Dick Whittington, Ali Baba, the Tortoise and the Hare, the Emperor's New Clothes, Aladdin, et al. These sometimes ramble, then run out of steam, stopping rather than ending. Short spoofs of nursery rhymes ("A Little Nut Tree," "Hey, Diddle, Diddle," "Mary, Mary") have more bite, while the original pieces ("A Hand in the Bird," "Physical Training," "The Price of Debauchery") are chiefly naughty. Blake's illustrations add flavor and balance. Deliciously zany, they defuse the bleak inhumanity of Dahl's vision. Dahl's stew has low nutritive value, but its pungent aroma might tempt the reluctant reader to indulge. A selection of Dahl's short stories was published by Knopf last month ( LJ 4/15/90).--Ed.

"A woman who my mother knows/ Came in and took off all her clothes."
By cathyr
Author: Roald Dahl
Illustrator: Quentin Blake
First published: 1989

A poetry collection with Dahl's nonsensical humour, taking well known children's fables, fairy tales and nursery rhymes, and twisting them. They often include an "adult" twist.

The kindle version is well formatted and includes all the black and white pencil drawings by Quentin Blake.

I also subsequently bought the paperback. The images match those in the kindle version - black and white pencil sketches by Quentin Blake, in the same arrangement and similar scale. Paperback includes a "a whole load of Roald Dahl treats". (Not included in kindle version).

This is a book of snigger'ingly funny poems that pre-teen boys would take great delight shocking their Mum's with, reading to their little sisters, or behind the shelves in the library. There's nothing really Bad about them, certainly not by today's standards, and they are fun little twists. There are some light sexual references, gore, tragicomedy, and phrasing that could be deemed racist. Maybe pick and choose the ones you like if you are exploring it with a younger reader.

But otherwise clever rhymes with unusual twists and Dahl's naughty sense of humour. A memorable read.

from "Hansel and Gretel":
"The Brothers Grimm who wrote this story
Made it a thousand times more gory.
I've taken out the foulest scene
In order that you won't turn green.
It is beyond me how it came
To merit such enormous fame.
Did parents really, in those days,
Agree to read such gruesome plays
To little children in the night?
And did they never die of fright?
It might have been okay, who knows,
If there'd been humour in the prose.
Did I say humour? Wilhelm Grimm?
There's not a scrap of it in him." location 464

Read aloud - 6+ (selected poems)
Read yourself - 10+ (naughty poems which the giggly pre-teen will think s/he understands...)

Everybody is beautiful one way or another
By Norliza Ismail
This is one of the fairy tale stories every parent should have in their bookshelves for their kids to enjoy and read while they are growing up, that actually have moral values for the kids to learn. I've enjoyed reading this when I was a kid and now when I have my own kids, I would definitely make sure they read this as one of their booklist.

This book is about a little duck who isn't like any of its brothers and sisters who are yellow and beautiful, and everybody calls it the "Ugly Duckling". It is ostracized by everybody it knows and due to this he runs away from home, growing up alone and have several little adventures of it's own, and one time wishing it is as beautiful as a swan.

You cannot go wrong with these timeless Golden Books!
By SunnyDayz4U
I have treasured this book since I was a child and it has always been a part of my very fond memories. I was thrilled to see this book for sale after all these (40+?) years and I am so excited to be able to impart the innocent and meaningful life lessons that these timeless quality books have unto my grandchildren. I'm sure they will love this book as much as I did; and if not, I am glad to have it back just for a quick trip back to those good ole days, even if it's only for five minutes. I purchased this book as a used seventies edition and it looks like it's been loved and smells like a good book should. The condition was exactly as described and I would highly recommend this seller.

From the viewpoint of a 'depressive'
By Straightforward
I enjoyed reading Matt's book on his experience of going through depression; it's part autobiography, part self-help manual - there is very much a sense of the author putting things back in place, mapping out the topography of his own mind and discovering a place where he can comfortably be himself. By putting it all down on paper, he is exorcising the demons in the darkness by exposing them to the light of public examination.

As someone who has also been through the experience of depression for many years and has also arrived at incredibly similar conclusions after coming out the other side, I recognise completely the numb, bleak, monochromatic existence that he describes; the endless days ahead, the wasted days behind. The inability to realise that you have an impact on others, that you even matter. That anything matters.

But it was this that made the 'depression years' in the book seem almost as turgid and endless as going through the experience again for real; by the 80th page, I really was feeling bleak; I started to recognise that familiar 'me me me' narrative that so bored me about myself when I was depressed and talking about it with friends, and reading the book itself almost became like a microcosm of battling with depression itself: were things really going to get better? Would I really start enjoying this book before it was too late? What was wrong with me for not feeling the same joyous giddiness that all the celebs on the covers evidenced in their soundbite quotes? Was I hateful for writing a less-than-glowing review of Matt's very personal and revealing book, risking hurting his feelings for my own subjective self-satisfaction?

Even though this opening part of the book was bleak and uncomfortable to read, I accepted it for what it was and struggled through, adopting the maxim that sometimes, just keeping going is a victory for positivity. There were times when I came close to ending it all and closing the book for good, but - without checking the exact page count - I think the sun finally started to come out after 100 pages. That was too much for me as a depressive to get much out of - it was a hard read; it seemed to be there to function as a 'window into the nightmare' for those who haven't experienced it. They might find it useful, but although cases of depression seem to have similar themes and motifs, they vary in context as much as the sufferers themselves are unique individuals.

After that, when the book deals with where his head's at now, it gets easier. But these are things I wanted more detail on - there are lots of lists, and very very short chapters all through this book, which make it easier to pick up and get into - but they also make the reading experience frustratingly insubstantial at times. Maybe there's something to this book leading the advance against the taboo of depression and suicide - if that's the case, then I hope it performs the function of getting it out into the public arena once and for all.

There were times, when reading, that I felt that pang of wonder and dread that comes when you know exactly what the next sentence is going to be - and there are times when that same sensation of knowing felt like something jaded and predictable; similarly, there were times when I felt the tone of the narrative to be a gentle one, speaking great truths, but it also felt at later times like I was a bed-bound patient being ministered by someone with the bedside manner of Alan Titchmarsh; oozing soothingness and calm to a poor ill person.

Life has brought me to the same conclusions as Matt, though; that's a sign we're both going the right way.

A very thought-provoking read that isn't the magical work of profundity that the publishers seem to want to market it as - that's far too much expectation to have for what is essentially a very humble enterprise; that of an author working through what happened to him in the most natural way possible for him - via his pen. It is a work of kindness, and of good intention; it is a work of reason, and a testament to the powers of the mind; but I feel that it's being hyped into something that the author never intended it to be.

This book is useful for those who wish to get an idea of what it feels like to go through depression. It would also be useful to someone in the middle of a depressive episode, I suppose. Personally I was both pleased and disappointed by this book - pleased that we had arrived at almost exactly the same perspective on life, but disappointed that I could therefore only confirm my existing beliefs rather than challenge them and learn something new.

Finally, my views on happiness, how to find it, and how to keep it (as Matt finishes in the same way himself):

1) All that exists is the moment of 'now'. Everything else - the past and the future - is in your head. Leave the past behind you; it has gone. By being positive in the present moment, you are sowing seeds of good possibilities for the future; there is no need to dwell modbidly on what is yet to happen.

2) Being kind to others, and having your actions affect others in a positive way will make all parties a lot happier.

3) Diversity of choice produces stress, not happiness. Keep it simple.

4) Don't let your mind tell you downers. When you catch yourself having miserable thoughts, take positive action be reinforcing the upbeat, truthful alternative - even if you don't feel like you are.

5) Your mind can be trained like a dog. A repeated action becomes a habit after three weeks or so. Acquire positive habits, drop the negative ones.

6) Don't judge. It's not as simple as 'succeed' or 'fail'. Just accept and be open to what is.

7) Exercise makes the body happy

8) EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT.

9) Your good mood deserves protection - it is fragile and valuable. Your good mood is stronger than the bad mood of others.

10) You can always do better tomorrow.

11) People feel happier if they have a purpose.

12) Everyone's life is different. Everyone comes to terms with their life in their own way.

Ultimately I'm a bit disappointed by this book, but I totally recognise the story; I liked it without getting as excited as everyone else seems to be doing.

An absolute must read!
By lorelei
This is one of the best books I've ever read in my entire life. To be honest, I was interested in this book as someone with three anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder. Being able to relate so thoroughly to everything Matt Haig said made the book a little difficult to read, but it was also an incredibly validating experience. I absolutely devoured it. Immediately after finishing it, I gave it to my husband and had him read it too. This explains exactly what these disorders are like in terms that allow someone who has never experienced the throes of anxiety and depression to step into the shoes of those who do. I recommend it for everyone who doesn't have those problems, so that they might understand and be able to empathize. I recommend it to everyone who does struggle like I struggle, so that they might feel validated, comforted, and reminded that they aren't alone. I honestly can't recommend this book highly enough. It's life changing.

So many reasons to stay alive
By Qwikreader
The mind is a terrifyingly wonderous universe, and Matt's candid account of his journey with and through depression, anxiety and other mindscapes; have given me clearer insight to and deeper empathy for my teenage daughter in the battle she faces daily on her own journey.
That I'm not wrong to keep giving her hope despite the darkness.
Brilliantly written and really down-to-earth about his experiences.

I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up because I had been reading all of Maeve Binchy's novels and I was rapidly running out of them. This book was on a display table with some of Maeve Binchy's work at the bookstore, because they are both contemporary Irish women authors. I found thir writing styles similar, and I found myself really engrossed in this novel by the end. I would recommend it for anyone who has read Binchy and enjoyed her, and I am pleased to have found another Irish author that I can enjoy as much. I am currently reading another one of her novels and I plan to read them all. It is satisfying escapist literature at it's best.

One of her Best!
By Lisa
I have read many of the author's books, but I think this one is the best I have read so far. The characters are well written and you can feel your feelings for the characters change throughout the book. The novel ties in the thoughts of all sides and you feel more as though the situations are real, and you are a friend hearing about it first hand. Great chick lit read!

    About the Author
strongChris F.A. Johnson/strong was introduced to Unix in 1990 and learned shell scripting because there was no C compiler on the system. His first major project was a menu-driven, user-extensible database system with report generator. Chris uses the shell as his primary, general-purpose programming language, and his projects have included a member database, menuing system, and POP3 mail filtering and retrieval. Chris is the author of emShell Scripting Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach/em (Apress, 2005). When not pushing shell scripting to the limit, he designs and codes web sites, teaches chess, and composes cryptic crosswords.

A Good Guide Through the Mysteries of Bash Programming
    By Neil G. Matthews
Considering the critical role Bash has in the installation and operation of Linux distributions and thereby its ubiquity, Bash as a programming language is frequently overlooked by programmers. The author of Pro Bash Programming has done a creditable job in providing the wherewithal for everyone from beginners to expert shell programmers to write more powerful and efficient scripts using Bash, as he takes you through a fast paced coverage of bash's capabilities. Along the way, many useful, well explained and commented practical scripts are provided, many of which can be used to build and test your own scripts. The author claims that while he used to use C when he needed extra speed, that was several years ago and he now does everything in the shell. This book shows how.

The 230 page book is divided into the 15 chapters below, with each chapter ending with a summary of the commands covered and some well chosen exercises.

1 Hello, World! Your first Shell Program
    - how to create and run a script and establish good scripting habits
    2 Input, Output and Throughput
    - echo, printf, read and IO streams
    3 Looping and Branching
    - tests, conditional execution, looping constructs
    4 Command-Line Parsing and Expansion
    - quoting, brace, tilde, parameter, variable arithmetic and pathname expansion, command and process substitution, word splitting and parsing with getops
    5 Parameters and Variables
    - variable scope (essential reading), positional parameters and expansion using patterns, arrays - indexed and associative
    6 Shell Functions
    - how to define, use and set exit codes, use of compound commands, creation and use of function libraries
    7 String Manipulation
    - concatenation, processing character by character, case conversion, inserting, overlaying and trimming strings
    8 File Operations and Commands
    - reading, use of external commands, regular expressions with grep, sed and awk, file name expansion options
9 Reserved Words and Builtin Commands
    - good coverage of builtin commands, particularly read (including into arrays) plus a very informative section on how to use builtin commands correctly
10 Writing Bug-Free Scripts and Debugging the Rest
    - good scripting programming recommendations for bug free code plus a test and debug example
11 Programming for the Command Line
    - manipulating the directory stack, filesystem and miscellaneous functions, managing man pages, games!
    12 Runtime Configuration
    - command line options and arguments, menus, configuration files, scripts with several names, using environment variables
    13 Data Processing
    - sorting and searching arrays, various ways of reading arrays into memory, grids (string and two dimensional), data file formats
    14 Scripting the Screen
    - using the screen as a blackboard or canvas, rendition modes and colours, text scrolling - rolling dice example
    15 Entry-Level Programming
    - single key entry, use of author's key-funcs library, sanity checking, form entry, reading the mouse!

    Appendix: Shell Variables
    - alphabetic listing of (1) variables set by bash and (2) variables used by bash

One of the strengths of this book is that the author explains the fastest way to accomplish many standard programming tasks through the appropriate choice of one of the many different bash methods available, including the choice between builtin bash commands and external commands. I found chapter 9 particularly interesting here. Chapter 7 shows how effective bash is at string manipulation with the right techniques - amazing! While the book covers bash 4.0 and often uses non POSIX extensions, those unable to use bash 4.0 or constrained to POSIX compliant code are not forgotten, with the author providing alternatives that work within these constraints.

Where a subject is introduced in an early chapter and expanded on later, the author thoughtfully provides the forward reference. Source code for the included scripts is available from the publisher's webpage for this book at [...]

The 10 page index works reasonably well, but you may find it worthwhile grabbing the companion eBook so you can directly search through the book to make the best use of it as a reference source. If you buy the dead tree version, the eBook is available on-line for $10 until April 2010 direct from the publisher.

I can recommend this book to anyone that can benefit from automating repetitive shell based tasks in Linux but isn't sure how best to go about it. The included scripts and wealth of tips on how to avoid common bash coding problems will provide you with a quick return on your investment.

A word from the technical reviewer
    By Edward L. Schaefer
Full disclosure: I was the technical reviewer for this book, and I admit my opinion may be biased. However, I was just technical mercenary hired by the publisher so there is no financial benefit to me if the book does well or not.

Is author Chris F. A. Johnson pushing an agenda? You bet he is and that is a good thing. His agenda isn't hidden; he succinctly states it in the introduction:

"While most shell programs do call external utilities, a lot of programming can be done entirely in the shell. Many scripts call just one or two utilities for information that is used later in the script. Some scripts are little more than wrappers for other commands such as awk, grep, or sed. This book is about programming in the shell itself. There's a sprinkling of the second type, where the script gets information (such as the current date and time) and then processes it. The third type gets barely more than a cursory nod."

Resist the urge to call awk, grep, sed, perl or another Linux tool first; this book teaches the Bash shell's prgramming capabilities. Why call an external program when the shell can do the work for you?

Should this be your first Bash programming book? Not if you require lots of syntactic hand holding. But if a motivated and clever beginner masters the first 10 chapters of this book, that beginner is on their way to becoming an expert. You will learn how to create functions, deal with files, parse strings, etc - correctly!

There might also be something here for the expert. I've been creating *nix shell scripts for a long time, and I admit to being set in my programming ways. After reviewing this book, I changed the way I now parse and manipulate strings.
