Explores The Line Between Art and Artifact
By James I. Cole
Hardcover, plain boards with (uninspiring) photographic DJ, 12" x 9.25", 195 pages. 151 objects in color. 32 b/w field photos. 1 mao of Africa showing location of tribes. Full title : Art/ArtifactAfrican art In Anthropology Collections.Int6roduction by Susan Vogel, Text by : Arthur Danto, R.M. Gramly, Mary Lou Hultgren, Enid SSchildkrout, Jeanne Zeidler.Published by The Center For African Art, New york & Prestel Verlag, 1988.

From Vogel's introduction : "Art/Artifact is an exhibition about the ways Western outsiders have regarded African art and material culture over the past century". Featuring art from the Buffalo Museum Of Science, the Hampton University Museu,. the American Museum Of Natural History. The works represented are almost enough to get the book 4-stars, and the Mijikenda Memorial Effigies from Kenya are first rate. A little dated in photos and a little pretentious in text, I eas just deciding between 4 stars or 3-stars, and the binding fell apart on me, which alwasys leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Sam's Sandwich, by David Pelham

Just how gross can Sam make that sandwich he’s giving to his sister? Lift the flaps to find out! A classic kid-pleaser, back by popular demand.

Sam’s sister wants a very special sandwich, so he does his best to oblige. Lettuce, cheese, tomato, salami, and so much more. Just unfold each layer to see what surprise he has slipped underneath—if you haven’t already figured it out from the hints in the rhyming text! Served up as a sandwich-shaped book with a gruesome guessing game on every spread, Sam’s Sandwich is a delectable gift for little terrors.

From Publishers Weekly
Once they feast their eyes on the exterior of this mouth-watering volume, youngsters will be impatient to dig in. The front and back covers are designed--quite convincingly--to resemble pieces of bread, and the spine reveals the neatly layered ingredients of the special snack Sam prepares for his sister. The most delectable morsels, however, are found within--each spread depicts one of the foods the obliging brother adds to his culinary creation. But the realistic renditions of sliced tomato, cucumber, cheese, pastrami, onion and hard-boiled egg fold out to disclose some of Sam's secret--and less appetizing--additions, including a fly, worm, slug, caterpillar and some ants. Youngsters will be too engrossed in Sam's creative sandwich-making to notice that Pelham's singsong rhyme occasionally falters. This cleverly designed book accomplishes what it sets out to do: it serves up a tasty little snack rather than a full-course meal. Ages 4-9.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Encased in thick boards to simulate slices of bread, a comic novelty: deftly phrased verse describes a sandwich Sam stacks for his innocent sister, each layer (lettuce, cheese, etc.) hiding a creature within a clever foldout (``...to really make her squirm/Sam dropped in a wriggly...[worm]''), the whole truly resembling a fat booby trap of a sandwich. Guaranteed to compel attention. (Picture book. 4-9) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Gross and Funny.........
By Book lover Hawaii
Sam's makes his sister a special sandwich by slipping in little surprises such as snails and caterpillars. The book is shaped like a sandwich and each page is an ingredient (lettuce, tomatoes, eggs....) which open with flaps to show the surprise. My first graders think this book is hilarious and want me to read it practically on a daily basis.

Looking for a Book for Boys about Tormenting Their Sisters
By Barbara A. Hughes
Sam's Sandwich is a delightful book about a boy who creates a sandwich for his sister(unknowingly to her) using unusual ingredients such as ants and other bugs. The book is written in rhyme with lift-up flaps revealing the unusual ingredients at the end to each stanza of the rhyme. Children love to read the book, again and again, screaming..."Ohhh...and aahh and ick". There is no better review by a child than "READ IT AGAIN!" This is a wonderful book to help children with rhyme and a fun, fun book for the whole family.

With its pantheon of illustrious alumni like Bear Bryant, Herschel Walker, Peyton Manning, and Nick Saban, the SEC is the altar at which millions of Americans worship every Saturday, from Texas to Kentucky to Florida.

If the SEC is a religion, its deity is radio talk-show host Paul Finebaum. In My Conference Can Beat Your Conference, Finebaum, chronicles the rise of the SEC and his own unlikely path to college football fame. Finebaum offers his blunt wisdom on everything from Joe Paterno and the Penn State scandal to the relevancy of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s girlfriend, and chronicles the best of his beloved callers, and the worst of his haters.

From the Back Cover

"If God made the world in seven days, He spent the eighth day in his two-car garage, sipping on a cold one, listening to Merle Haggard, and dreaming up the Southeastern Conference."

South of the Mason-Dixon line, everyone knows Paul Finebaum. And after a popular 2012 profile in the New Yorker, a spot at ESPN's College GameDay desk, and a contract to be the face of ESPN's SEC Network, the rest of the country has finally been introduced to "the Mouth of the South": the Memphis-born radio-talk-show host with a habit of saying whatever he thinks—and letting his callers say whatever they think, too.

In My Conference Can Beat Your Conference, Finebaum chronicles the rise of the SEC and his own improbable path toward being "the Oprah of college football," as he was dubbed by the Wall Street Journal in 2013. And it doesn't matter whether fans love or hate him—they tune in regardless. Finebaum's opinions matter. He's condemned coaches to the gallows of lesser programs, helped elect governors, and prophesied victories. With My Conference Can Beat Your Conference, fans and enemies of Paul Finebaum will be given an all-access pass to the powerhouse teams and passionate fan bases of the country's most legendary conference, plus a behind-the-scenes look into an incredible 2013 Iron Bowl.

Fanning the flames for SEC lovers--and SEC haters
By Paul Mastin
Is it football season yet? I am counting the days. If the preseason polls, recruiting reports, and various season forecasts haven't whetted your appetite, pick up Paul Finebaum's My Conference Can Beat Your Conference: Why the SEC Still Rules College Football. Fans of SEC teams will love the book for the title alone. Every other college football fan in the country will hate the book for the title alone. But trust me, college football fans of all stripes will enjoy Finebaum's writing, even when he makes you want to scream at him.

Finebaum, a sports talk radio host and ESPN contributor, takes the reader through the 2013 football season, focusing primarily on the SEC, but with plenty of reference to other teams and games around the country. As the title might suggest, he is a big fan of the SEC. He is convinced that their dominance is here to stay. Sure, they've won 7 of the last 8 national championship games. You can't argue with that sort of success. Finebaum does a nice job of arguing for SEC rule, forever and always and into the future, but I have to think that everything has cycles. The SEC is hot, and has been for a while, but there is a lot of good college football in the USA. So while he gives SEC lovers plenty of reason to love, he only adds kindling to the fires of SEC hate that burn in the other conferences.

Why do other conferences hate the SEC? Envy. Fatigue from seeing them win, win, win. At the end of 2013, "It was open season on the SEC . . . all because it was too successful. . . . The rest of the country was sort of pulling for Florida State only because FSU had the lone chance to end the SEC's glorious title run. This is what it's come to." Even though the SEC lost the 2013 championship game, Finebaum believes they will continue to dominate other conferences. Auburn's victory over Alabama "ended a dynasty," then the Crimson Tide was humiliated by OU in the Sugar Bowl, but Finebaum believes "the foundation is too strong for Bama not to remain a top-flight program, with or without Saban." And down the line, he argues that even middle-tier SEC teams are better than the best of other conferences.

As a Texan and a Baylor fan, I was interested in Finebaum's take on Texas A&M. He writes that "of all the programs in the SEC, I think A&M poses the greatest long-term threat to Alabama's dominance." They have the recruiting, the fans, the facilities, the money, the buzz, the coach. I personally don't see it, but Finebaum knows the SEC better than just about anybody. Maybe he's right. Speaking of A&M, I think it's interesting that A&M and Missouri, coming off mediocre seasons in the Big 12, entered the SEC as competitors. A Heisman winner, defeating Alabama, Missouri nearly running the table. Sounds like Big 12 football might be successful in the SEC to me.

Finebaum is hilarious to read. I have never heard his radio show (It is widely syndicated, but mostly in Alabama and around SEC country.), but would love to tune in. He manages to make lots of fans angry. When he goes to games, he is alternatively adored and cursed. I didn't feel like cursing him, but I thought he might deserve a cream pie in the face. I enjoyed his self-effacing humor (He says ESPN wanted him on GameDay because "they were looking for a balding, nerdy-looking, middle-aged guy"), his boldness in his predictions and willingness to eat crow when he's wrong, and his unabashed affection for the greatness that is college football.

Even if you don't love the SEC, and even if you don't love Alabama, if you are a fan of college football, you will love My Conference Can Beat Your Conference. Now to count the days until kickoff. . . .

Seriously mislabeled ....
By SEC fan
I guess the book's title was invented to try to garner more readers. It is seriously mistitled. Only the first chapter really has anything to do with "my conference vs. your conference". The rest of the book is a history of Paul Finebaum, and even more annoying, a history of Alabama, Auburn and the Alabama/Auburn rivalry.

I am an SEC fan and am very proud of the SEC's record in college football. However, the BCS championships of any team other than Alabama and Auburn are mentioned only in passing. BORING!

I love the Paul Finebaum Show. It is entertaining. I love the callers, though I do think most of them just reinforce the idea that all Southerners are serious rednecks (what should I expect ... most of the callers are from Alabama). Still ... its entertaining to listen to the destruction of the English language on a daily basis.

I would have loved to learn more about Paul's insane callers. I would have loved a more in depth discussion of why the SEC is so much better than other conferences.

As it was, sitting here in January, 2016, I was mostly entertained by how WRONG so many of Paul's predictions were - South Carolina would remain a powerhouse? Malzahn would be a threat to Nick Saban? On and on and on .... it only goes to prove that college football, especially in the SEC, is anything but predictable.

Paul had a great opportunity to really write an interesting book about the SEC. Instead, like most people who live in Alabama, eventually the book just turns into an anthem about Alabama .... with a little redemption for Auburn fans thank to the "kick six" ending.

If you are an Alabama fan, buy the book ... you'll love it. Otherwise, prepare to be disappointed.

Uninteresting, pretty much what you'd expect from the title.
By Jason C. Hortman
I never anticipated that this book would be a great masterpiece of literature or anything, but I really didn't even get through half the book before just putting it down. It's just another mostly ghost-written book that was published either as a money-grab or to help publicize the name of ESPN's newest celebrity (or both).

From Publishers Weekly
Created by the Center for Cartoon Studies' director and two of his former students, this how-to-make-comics book for young readers takes a couple of unusual tacks. For one thing, it skips the usual rudiments of how to draw in favor of explaining the formal characteristics of comics: panels, balloons, lettering and so on. For another, it doubles as a story—about a knight on a quest for a bubblegum–chewing dragon, and the magic elf who teaches the knight all about the joy of cartooning. It's a cute premise, and the art's simple, bold brushstrokes and flat colors are zippy and fun. Sturm and company even sneak in a few comics in-jokes (when several characters fall into water, the elf exclaims I guess this would be called a SPLASH panel!). Unfortunately, the plot and the tutorial material repeatedly stumble over each other: the goofy twists in the story occasionally have a bit of instruction shoehorned in, but more often don't serve any educational purpose—or simply seem like the result of stream-of-consciousness jam cartooning. And kids looking for cartooning guidance may be frustrated to find that the book takes its readers' ability to draw expressively for granted. (Apr.)

*Starred Review* Not quite a how-to book, as the cover might suggest, this is rather a stupendous new high for children’s graphic novels, spearheaded by comics maestro Sturm (Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow, 2007). Ostensibly, this is the adventure of an eager knight, a sweet-toothed horse, and a magic elf hunting down a gum-chewing dragon, and those reading for the adventure itself will not be disappointed, filled as it is with humor, action, and a great girl-empowering twist. But along the way, lessons in the language of sequential art are woven seamlessly into the narrative, explaining the basics of how elements such as panels and word balloons work, while concluding bonus features offer specifics on terminology (like gutters and stems) and common symbols (like speed lines). Newcomers Andrew Arnold and Alexis Frederick-Frost, using varying page compositions to keep the sizable volume visually captivating, have constructed a tale that works just as well as a read-aloud for the very young as it does a lesson for everyone from fans of the form to the wholly uninitiated. As an examination of the medium, it’s a supremely worthy spiritual legacy to Scott McCloud’s seminal Understanding Comics (1993). As a straight-up graphic adventure, it may be the best of the year. “An insightful and enjoyable way for kids to learn about cartooning, presented in a vibrant graphic format. In fairy-tale fashion, the Magic Cartooning Elf helps a young princess with writer's block produce her first comic. A story-within-a-story emerges, and the princess creates a deceptively silly tale of a knight, a dragon, a whale and a horse that loves candy. Along the way, the Elf drops informative hints to the reader about the structure of the story, introducing basic elements of cartooning and rudimentary techniques. Though seemingly simplistic, this multilayered composition is an excellent teaching tool to whet the appetites of aspiring young doodlers and even offers a pleasant twist in an otherwise apparently straightforward plot. Against the abundance of vanilla graphic nonfiction for kids on the market, this is unexpectedly lively. Simple cartooning basics offered after the story are quite appealing; even the most reluctant artist may be inspired to pick up a pencil and give it a shot. Entertaining and surprisingly edifying. (Graphic nonfiction. 9-12)” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Gr 2-6-The young princess, thought to be ensconced in a tower, is missing. A "BRAVE and EAGER knight" and his less-than-fearless horse Edward learn that she has been abducted by a dragon and remains captive on Dragon Island. Assisted by the Magic Cartooning Elf, the knight goes in search of her. In this story within a story, the princess learns how to create her own cartoon. Basic principles of creating comics are taught by context, inference, and direct instruction. The humor, action, adventure, and charming characters hold readers' attention and draw them into a fantasy world of a candy-consuming dragon and knights who have been turned into vegetables. Readers learn about the uses of panels, the importance of words, and placement of thought balloons. Each tutorial panel contains clever and inventive touches that illustrate the capabilities of the format. The progression of the pink gum bubble on the first four pages is a classic. At the conclusion of this delightful tale, cartooning basics such as panels, gutters, tiers, word balloons, depiction of emotion, and movement are explained in an organized and straightforward fashion. This is a volume for kids who love comics, who enjoy an adventure filled with action and humor, are natural-born artists, or who aspire to become comic-book creators. A surefire hit.” ―Barbara M. Moon, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY, School Library Journal, Starred Review

“For anyone who loves comics, would like to make comics or wants to know what makes them work, these two titles, beautifully designed in paperback editions with French flaps, supply a great deal of insight. Adventures in Cartooning, disarming in its simplicity, at first appears to be aimed at the beginner. And certainly it has much to offer novices in terms of both textual and visual vocabulary and even baseline drawing instruction. But the book also suggests the many uses for comics, from entertainment to education. A princess who believes she "just can't draw well enough to make a comic!!!" inadvertently summons a Magic Cartooning Elf, who resembles a flying leprechaun and helps her build confidence through simple instruction. The elf explains the importance of panels (their size and pacing), speech balloons (as well as their content's type size and boldface) and the climactic plot twist; step-by-step drawing instructions appear at the end. Even seasoned comics readers may more fully appreciate the work of their favorite creators after reading this book.” ―Shelf Awareness

Empowering in So Many Ways
By Summerroll
This book was created by three men who love the idea that anyone can make a graphic book out of doodles. Like all good and true teachers, they make what they do seem easy, and a lot of fun. They show the rules, and then they break the rules.

The book grew out of an assignment given by the author, James Sturm, at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont. Sturm was inspired by " Ed Emberly's Drawing Book: Make a World" to start his own cartooning school. If you or your children have ever seen Emberly's books, you already know that Emberly strongly believes that anyone who can draw circles, lines, dots, and polygons can doodle almost anything. In his books, you can find instructions on doodling a camel, vampire, truck, robot, skyscraper, airplane, alligator, alien, etc., all using these simple graphic elements.

However, Adventures in Cartooning is much more than a how-to book. The book contains an ingenious fairy tale-on-its-head, of a knight, a missing princess, a cartoon fairy, a candy-loving horse named Edward, people transformed into vegetables, formidable castle walls, a journey inside a whale, and a fire-breathing dragon. Along the way, the fairy shows how panels can demonstrate action over time, convey scale, organize the order of conversation, show the place and time of the cartoons, demonstrate superpowers (walking over water, on the moon, in the North Pole, inside the whale). He shows how thought bubbles are different from action bubbles (kazam!) from speech bubbles. He also shows how panels can be manipulated to show how tall (e.g. castle wall) or deep (e.g. ocean) the backgrounds are. The thought bubbles are hilarious: the knight dreams of ways to get across the wall (helicopter, wings, tunnels), and Edward dreams of doughnuts and lollipops.

You can tell that this is an innocent books with humor that will appeal to kids from ages 3 to 12. In fact, I chose this book to bring to story-time at school, for a class of second graders. They ate it up. We read together, and I asked them questions, such as "What do you think will happen next?" "Why are the panels dotted?" (They are inside the whale) "Why do the speech bubbles overlap?" (Everyone is talking at once) We had so much fun. They loved that the ending of the book has a few surprises. The kids said they wanted to go home and ask their parents for the book. The teacher also loved the book. It didn't hurt that I brought a snack of cheesy bread for the class (always bribe your critics).

It is a paperback book, but the paper is thick, semi-glossy, and of good quality. It is well worth the price of the book. I applaud the authors for contributing this original book to the children's library.

Inspiring book for aspiring cartoonists of all ages!
By captkevman
I organize a local group for comic & cartoon creators, and at any given time, I have a handful of related books either in my "wish list" or in "save for later" status in my cart. This was one of the books I was "saving for later" for over a year. I had put it in my cart based on an automated suggestion without even reading the description (I thought the title was descriptive enough).

So I finally decided to purchase it, and when it arrived, I was surprised to see that it was targeted at kids (see what happens when you don't read the description)? Not to worry, though, because it serves as a fantastic inspiration for anyone interested in creating comics, even if they think they're not "good enough". The artwork is very simple and fun, and breaks down any walls of intimidation that more comprehensive instructional books may put up around the reader.

In fact, within the first couple of pages, a princess trying to make a comic declares in frustration, "I just can't draw well enough to make a comic!!!" -- to which the Magic Cartooning Elf replies, "THAT'S NOT TRUE!!!", and in the next pages eases any fear the reader may have about making comics.

I'm organizing a community drawing event this fall, and this book is going to be used quite a bit during that event!

This is a must-have for every parent with creatively-inclined children, or for anyone of any age interested in creating comics.

Fun story with great cartooning lessons
By C. Cenotti
This book came as a recommendation for my 5 year old daughter who loves drawing. It was recommended by a professional artist and one of the faculty at the Center for Cartoon Studies. The story is fun and funny with a very clever twist that, without spoiling it, made my daughter very happy and excited. It also inspired her to start creating her own comics using Ed Emberly's "Make a World" book. They are the perfect combination for a young enthusiastic artist.

The Dissociative Mind in Psychoanalysis: Understanding and Working With Trauma is an invaluable and cutting edge resource providing the current theory, practice, and research on trauma and dissociation within psychoanalysis. Elizabeth Howell and Sheldon Itzkowitz bring together experts in the field of dissociation and psychoanalysis, providing a comprehensive and forward-looking overview of the current thinking on trauma and dissociation.

The volume contains articles on the history of concepts of trauma and dissociation, the linkage of complex trauma and dissociative problems in living, different modalities of treatment and theoretical approaches based on a new understanding of this linkage, as well as reviews of important new research. Overarching all of these is a clear explanation of how pathological dissociation is caused by trauma, and how this affects psychological organization -- concepts which have often been largely misunderstood.

The Dissociative Mind in Psychoanalysis will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapists, trauma therapists, and students.

Review

"In this outstanding volume, Howell and Itzkowitz have collected a comprehensive set of scholarly contributions covering the depth and breadth of dissociative phenomena, as well as the clinical concerns in working with the sequelae of complex trauma. They include the full range of psychoanalytic orientations and provide extensive surveys of cultural, historical, diagnostic, and developmental considerations along with research findings. On top of this considerable achievement, the editors have situated all of these contributions within the context provided by their own introductory chapters. This book will be used as a basic teaching text for years to come."- Lewis Aron, Ph.D., Director, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysts both, Itzkowitz and Howell are well-known for their work with the naturally occurring dissociative aspects of mind and for their wise, humanistic, and compassionate work with patients suffering with trauma-generated dissociation, patients many might be afraid to treat in private practice. Now they bring their accumulated wisdom, together with the thinking of many distinguished colleagues, to bear, placing dissociation and the dissociative mind firmly in the psychoanalytic tradition, reading it in various theoretical and cultural contexts, explaining how it became hidden from view, showing how to understand and treat its sufferers now. This book will teach, encourage, and support all therapists who look for the human being underneath the "pathology." A great gift to us all. - Donna Orange, Ph.D., Psy.D. author, The Suffering Stranger (Routledge, 2011)

Drs. Howell and Itzkowitz have fashioned a resource for those who are interested in learning more about psychoanalytic treatment and how psychoanalysts work with and help victims of trauma, traumatic, dissociation and dissociative disorders. Psychoanalysis, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, and trauma research all have a say in this outstanding volume which explores trauma and dissociation within a broad psychoanalytic context. The editors should be commended for their written contributions, for gathering chapters from leading experts in the area, and for the scope and depth of the issues addressed.- Judith Alpert, Ph.D. is Professor, Department of Applied Psychology, New York University and Professor and Clinical Consultant at New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

The Dissociative Mind in Psychoanalysis is a landmark in the growing synthesis between psychoanalysis and trauma theory. Elizabeth Howell... and Sheldon Itzkowitz, composed a wonderful volume, brimming with interesting yet contradictory information... This is a wonderful book, a "must-read" for anyone intereted in the bonus of psychoanalytic thinking in the field of trauma and dissociation, but also a must-read for every psychoanalyst working with survivors of trauma and dissociative patients... a very worthwhile and important book. - Nelleke Nicolai, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, trauma therapist, author, The Netherlands, European Society for Trauma & Dissociation Newsletter

A book of its time
By George Halasz
This is an important book contextualising the history of trauma and dissociation within psychoanalysis, as well as a timely book. It provides the mental health professional community within and beyond psychoanalysis with a critical and urgently needed update on thinking and understanding - cutting-edge - by posing some basic questions that go to the essence of the relationship between  trauma, dissociation and psychoanalytic theory and practice. As such it is a confronting read.

The first three chapters of the four part book, written by the editors, begin with the provocative question ‘Is trauma-analysis psycho-analysis?’ with responses in the next two chapters, ‘From trauma- analysis to psychoanalysis and back again’ and 'The everywhereness of trauma and the dissociative structuring of the mind.’

As I reviewer with a deep clinical and personal interest in trauma studies I found plenty to be excited about; from van der Hart’s chapter bringing Janet and Freud into their often dissociated historical relationship, over how each dealt with dissociation, to Hainer’s rehabilitation of Ferenci’s contributions to the field.

In part two, the dominant orientations within psychoanalysis - Freud, Jung, Winnicott and Klein are reviewed in relation to trauma and dissociation.

Part three highlights the varieties of clinical ‘crisis' moments encountered in the psychoanalytic treatment of trauma and dissociative identity disordered patients (DID). Historically, the controversial diagnostic categories of multiple personality disorder (MPD) and DID have had their vocal adherents and detractors making claims and counter-claims over many years, but it is worth noting that the most recent edition of The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice (3rd Edition, 2016) has included separate chapters that deal with both the ’traumatized’ as well as the ‘dissociative identity disorder’ patients.

Finally and importantly in our ‘evidence-based’ practice of psychotherapy, part four offers an update  on current research based on the largest treatment outcome study of dissociative disorders, (the impressive treatment of patients with dissociative disorders, the TOP DD study),  to provide an insight into the challenges encountered by researching  the validity, assessment and treatment of DID.

Overall, this book is a book of it time as its 22 chapters manage to capture and paint a  graphic mosaic of the complex, evolving field of trauma and dissociation. Our understanding needs to match this rapidly transforming field. As such, we can choose to read chapters that speak to us on a ‘need-to-know’ basis.

This book will provide food for thought, in equal measure, at any stage in our carers: whether we are starting out as trainees, settled into a mid-career sense of growing confidence in our knowledge base, or, approaching retirement, provided we are still prepared to expose our sense of vulnerability and uncertainty to our peers and ourselves.

I do recommend this book to be read with a touch of awe and humility exposing how much we do not know, still.

Outstanding
By Allison Katz
Countless patients enter our consulting rooms having suffered severe traumas —yet theory and technique regarding the treatment of such populations is often considered separate from traditional psychoanalytic practice. This book addresses this disparity, among many other relevant issues, cementing it as a seminal contribution to contemporary psychoanalytic literature. Students and seasoned practitioners alike will benefit from this volume of scholarly essays as the contributors describe accounts of treating the dissociative mind, often considered unanalyzable, in frank, sophisticated, and accessible clinical vignettes.
A portion of this volume is dedicated to linking Freudian, Jungian, Ferenczian, Winnicottian, and Kleinian theories to concepts around dissociation, highlighting the hidden presence of these ideas throughout our history. Despite the importance of theories about dissociation in the work of our forefathers and foremothers, Itzkowitz and Howell reflect on how and why these ideas have been marginalized. Yet this ambitious collection of psychoanalytic history, theory, and clinical material remains eminently readable from start to finish. These writings challenge the reader to ponder our assumed understandings of the human mind, rendering this volume an invaluable contribution to curricula at psychoanalytic institutes worldwide. With beautiful pieces from Phillip M. Bromberg, Wilma S. Bucci, Richard A. Chefetz, and one of the last essays to be written by the late Abby Stein, among others, we in the field are remarkably fortunate to be given access to the compassionate work and thinking of Howell, Itzkowitz, and their colleagues.

I highly recommend reading the first paragraph on page 28 in the ...
By Dr Patricia Hunter
In the book THE DISSOCIATIVE MIND IN PSYCHOANALYSIS: UNDERSTANDING AND WORKING WITH TRAUMA, Elizabeth Howell and Sheldon Itzkowitz describe the treatment of trauma from multiple vantage points. Four chapters are written by these eloquent authors while nineteen additional mental health professionals narrate their experiences in working with trauma and dissociation, from historical, theoretical, clinical and research perspectives. This is a riveting and penetrating look at the way ordinary people have learned to cope with unbearable emotional experiences.. The psychological defense of dissociation is examined in ways that bring light to a subject fraught with controversy from the beginning. The authors clearly describe the way Freud changed his original seduction theory, which implicated sexual aggressors in the creation of mental illness, into the revised theory of infantile sexuality, which removed the idea of a perpetrator and now implicated the child as the instigator of merely fantasized sexual events.. I highly recommend reading the first paragraph on page 28 in the book, about the trail of Ernest Jone's, Freud's disciple and eventual biographer, in which he was accused of sexual assault and abuse. It captures just what was at stake for psychoanalysis in being open to the possibility of dissociated realities rather than imagined fantasies.

Blood Father: A Novel, by Peter Craig

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

A gripping novel about a young woman being chased by her violent past, and the flawed father forced to come to her rescue

Lydia Carson is an accident waiting to happen. Strung out, she's always running from disaster, and more often she's running right into it. Now at seventeen, Lydia has stumbled onto real trouble. Not only has she witnessed a brutal murder perpetrated by her boyfriend, but his minions are out to make sure that she doesn't have a story to tell the police.

John Link is a former Hell's Angel, an ex-con, trying to stay clean and sober while running a tattoo parlor from the kitchen of his trailer home. He's also Lydia's long-estranged father, and when both the police and her boyfriend's thugs are hot on Lydia's trail, Link becomes Lydia's only hope.

From the highly acclaimed author of Hot Plastic, Blood Father is a gripping novel that confirms Peter Craig's place among the best crime novelists of his generation.

From Publishers Weekly
Returning to the territory he mined so well in Martini Shot and Hot Plastic, Craig pens a rollicking if formulaic tale of a father coming to terms with his past and a daughter confronting her demons as they go on the lam from a Tijuana drug cartel. After shooting her mob-boss boyfriend, Jonah, in the midst of a drug heist, Lydia Carson turns to the only person she has left to trust--her Hell's Angel-with-a-heart-of-gold father, John Link. Lydia and John have been estranged more than a decade while he's been doing time for homicide. Raised by her mother and a series of grotesque stepfathers, Lydia has fallen into an ever-deepening cycle of drug abuse and delinquency. But together father and daughter dodge the cops, who want Lydia in connection with a murder she didn't commit, as well as Jonah's old gang, who want revenge for reasons unclear until the end, all the while making up for those lost years. As with Craig's previous books, this is, at heart, an exploration of what it means to be family. After John gives Lydia her first lesson on driving a motorcycle, he realizes that "all the weight of his own history... could finally have a purpose" if only he can help his daughter out of the mess she's made. It's moments like this that raise the book above its Hollywood cliché plot and make it an engaging, affecting read.

From Booklist
Lydia Carson, age 17, has managed to get herself mixed up with the wrong people: her boyfriend, an older man, is obviously not on the right side of the law. When he takes her along on a job and then insists that Lydia shoot someone (as a character-building exercise), Lydia does exactly that--but instead of the intended victim, she shoots her boyfriend. Now, on the run from his colleagues (cohorts?), she turns to the only person who can help: her long-estranged father, newly sprung from prison and trying to turn his life around. Unfortunately, the only way to protect his daughter is to plunge right back into his old life. This father-and-daughter tale, recast as a fast-paced thriller, solidifies the author's reputation as a writer with a fresh and vivid point of view. Its theme of family reconciliation will especially appeal to readers who like their thrillers to be about more than just good guys and bad guys. David Pitt

Four Star
By Nashoba Losa
Well, all in all, not a bad book at all. I did not enjoy the vulgar language but I suppose it is in keeping with the personalities of the characters. Too much time was spent examining the personality of the daughter but I suppose that was essential for the author. The book is a fast read and seldom bogged down. Sadly, there is some familiarity between the plot and the lives of actual people of whom I have read who have the same life lines, just pitiful and almost hopeless and un-rewarding. I would buy the book again and will keep it in my permanent library.

Dark side of the young drug influenced youth who populate la's lower echelon. Anti-hero tries to save daughter from herself and her sick boyfriend.
Lots of violence as you might expect but the characters who were most concerned about have some redeeming qualities that make the journey worthwhile.

Very good book!
By Brent_79
Blood Father is a well crafted crime drama the reads like the front page of your local paper. Not too tough to follow but very engaging. First heard of Peter Craig when I found Hot Plastic on the book shelf and gave it a whirl.....WOW, what a good book, I thought how can you follow that? Well he delivers once again with Blood Father! You will not be disapointed with this one. He also comes from a talented family, Sally Field being his mother and his brother Eli Craig just released a very funny film "Tucker & Dale VS Evil".
